张杰是国际知名物理学家，在高能量密度物理，激光核聚变，Ｘ－射线激光等研究领域都作出了重要贡献。他还是第三世界科学院院士、德国科学院院士和英国皇家工程院外籍院士，现为上海交通大学校长。
此次，美国国家科学院共新增选２１位外籍院士，其中有两位来自中国，除张杰外，还有一位是来自香港大学化学系的任咏华教授。
