这已是66岁的吕祖善第28次在博物馆做义务讲解员。副馆长雍泰岳轻声向记者介绍：老省长第一次到博物馆做讲解员时，整整准备了一个月。当时，按照他的提醒，博物馆很低调，只在博物馆网页上发了一个信息，但没想到，还是引起了媒体的关注。
对老省长一年半前的第一次讲解，坐在记者旁边的博物馆年轻讲解员裴媛媛告诉记者，印象至深。她说，得知老省长要当志愿者、做义务讲解员时，当时就有人私下议论他是否在“作秀”。可是，老省长还是那么认真投入，从岗前培训、熟悉展厅、查阅资料，到咨询专家、向讲解员和馆领导讨教，他都一丝不苟，还自己制作PPT。
吕祖善第一次当志愿者，听他讲解的是浙江工商大学到博物馆开展假期实践活动的10多名大学生。他当时讲解的内容是100万年前的史前浙江到100年前的近代浙江，内容很丰富、很精彩。但毕竟是第一次，老省长显得有些不自在。
他讲完后多次问同学们：这样讲听得懂吗？哪里还没有讲清楚？
“老省长转轨转得好”
知道吕祖善到博物馆当志愿者、做义务讲解员，吕祖善的老伴、儿子、媳妇和姐姐，都来到博物馆现场给他捧场、助阵，全场旁听。
亲人，最能理解吕祖善的想法。即将卸任时，吕祖善就考虑离任之后的闲暇做些什么。吕祖善坦言：“卸任后不想应邀参加这个协会那个协会，当这个长那个长。”发现国外有很多公务员退下来以后，做志愿者，做一些公益事业，他为之心动。
于是，他报名参加了浙江省博物馆志愿者服务队，接受培训后，成为博物馆700多名志愿者之一。
祖籍浙江诸暨、南京航空学院发动机设计专业毕业的吕祖善，曾在农场、工厂工作过。这位在省长岗位上工作了整整13个年头的老省长，对浙江省博物馆馆长陈浩说：“浙江是我的家乡，是浙江的山山水水和父老乡亲养育了我、培养了我。宣传浙江，服务浙江，我义不容辞，这也算为浙江文化强省建设再出点力。”
“老吕把做义务讲解员这‘第二职业’很当一回事儿。”吕省长的老伴说，“每次讲解前，老吕都要认真做功课。家人也非常支持他。好几次大家还七嘴八舌评论哪段讲得生动吸引人，哪些讲得贫乏；哪一段需要简洁，哪一段需要补充。”
天伦之乐，其乐融融，让吕祖善感到有益、充实、愉悦，生活中的世俗、繁琐都在他内心的丰富、充实中消失得无影无踪。难怪不少机关干部都说：“老省长转轨转得好。”
成为22名获表彰志愿者之一
吕祖善说：“原本以为自己对浙江历史有一定的了解。但越讲，越发现浙江历史底蕴深厚，自己不懂的太多。”为了做好讲解，他除了翻阅不少资料外，还多次求教浙江大学人文学院历史系的老师。记者了解到：老省长自己编写PPT，第一次是到浙大历史系讲的，目的是去求证、求教。看看讲的历史事实和观点对不对，还应做哪些修改和补充。面对好评，吕祖善多次说他这个讲稿是得到很多专家、学者支持帮助的。
在陈浩印象中，老省长“自我要求很高”，总想要多讲一些、多学一些。他从博物馆借了不少资料，几乎对每一件陈列品的文化背景都细细梳理一遍，有问题就请教专家。为了下一次的讲解更全面、更准确，他会利用数个星期里的闲暇，讨教、收集、消化相关材料。他对博物馆几乎是逢馆必进。他走遍浙江省内各类的考古遗址，全国各地的省市博物馆，出差间隙从不漏过。今年两会期间，吕祖善特意参观了国家博物馆的史前历史馆，留心每一件与浙江历史有关联的文物。
台上，娴熟地借助PPT，吕祖善从浙江史前的水稻种植，讲到他曾在中南美洲参观过的古玛雅文化的史前玉米种植；从唐代之后的浙江海外贸易与文化交流，延展到他在日本参观江户博物馆看到的展品；从浙江文化思想史上绕不过去的王阳明，推荐大家去贵州修文县东栖霞山的“阳明洞”……谈到南宋思想家吕祖谦提倡“经世致用”，吕祖善将它解释为“理论联系实际”；谈到永嘉学派重商，吕祖善说“温州人祖宗就有生意基因”；谈到元代浙江的丝绸业和瓷器业由官办转为民办，吕祖善认为，浙江民营经济源于元朝；谈到明代浙江出现许多市镇，吕祖善又联想到了浙江的县域经济……
台下，人们静静地听着。
已是第6次听老省长讲解的裴媛媛，作为中国美术学院美术史论专业的毕业生，她向记者介绍：老省长逐渐形成自己的宣讲风格，是在第3次讲解之后。到第4次，在向浙江小百花艺术团讲解时，他已经形成系统的史前文化分析理论知识，并能很清楚地表达逻辑顺序。老省长最初的讲稿是博物馆提供的统一版本，但是后来他另辟蹊径。前者围绕馆藏文物展开，而他的讲稿则以浙江兴起发展及其对中华文明进程作出贡献的历史进程为主题。
“现在，老省长已经是浙江历史文化讲演的专家了。他做的PPT也包罗万象，有自己的思维和思想构架。”裴媛媛说，“专业讲解员需要掌握每一件文物的具体特征及其背后隐含的文化价值和历史故事，老省长的讲解大多数是从更宽、更高的视野去审看浙江历史脉络的发展。这种视野不是我们专业讲解员能达到的，也是我努力学习的方向。”
今年4月13日，浙江博物馆举行2012年度优秀志愿者表彰会。吕祖善以志愿服务126个小时，列个人志愿者服务第16位。
颁奖会上，博物馆评价作为志愿者的吕祖善：“他以独特的个人魅力、优质的讲解服务，得到了社会各界的广泛关注和高度认可。他的身体力行、率先垂范，吸引一批高水平、高素质的人士成为浙博的志愿者。”
和来自浙江工业大学志愿队队长、电气技术人员，23岁的朱韬等22名获表彰的志愿者站在一起，吕祖善捧着荣誉证书，笑得那么灿烂。吕祖善说：“如果时间允许、身体允许，我会把义务讲解员的工作坚持做下去。”
“我真的是作为普通人，在做一件普通事”
11点45分，吕祖善的宣讲延长了15分钟后结束。2个多小时的宣讲，中途出去一会儿的只有13人次，最长2分钟，最短20多秒。
散场时，记者采访了在宣讲前看到的那位长者，了解到他是浙江省钱塘江管理局技术顾问，71岁的教授林炳尧。林炳尧说，他从1998年开始，在央视直播钱江潮时，作为嘉宾多次到现场解说。他说：“我以后解说钱江潮也想加些浙江文化的内容，让视野再宽广一些。今天是听人推荐，特意来听老省长的讲解。不错，真不错，对我很有启发。”下楼时，他还特意和吕祖善一边走一边交流。
那位一开始兴奋地走向报告厅的年轻人，对记者说，他的单位西泠印社就在博物馆隔壁。面对博物馆陈列展示的文物、图片，他过去多次来这儿，但大都只是看热闹，很少知道所以然。老省长的讲解确实太棒了。他现在真正理解了博物馆游览为什么说是“三分看物，七分听解”。
在博物馆门口，吕祖善再一次对记者说：“其实，我真的是作为普通人，在做一件普通事。我倒是很希望你对我的讲解多提宝贵意见。”他说，他今后的目标是讲满100场。
