早在3月22日，南农网络问政(网络问政县市行)平台就出现了“广东‘坟爷’事件爆出陆丰林业局长颜智远充当保护伞”的举报网帖。网帖称陆丰市林业局对“坟爷”非法占用生态林并擅自改变林地用途建设坟地等情况视而不见，“充当保护伞”。此前的3月19日，南方农村报新闻《人大代表承包公墓，非法敛财被称坟爷》率先报道“坟爷”事件。5月28日，南方农村报头版新闻《陆丰多部门为坟爷非法占地放行》对陆丰“坟爷”事件进行了追踪，并披露了陆丰市林业局绕过国土局，对“坟爷”占用林地并非法改变林地用途进行违规审批的问题。

10月17日，陆丰市纪委办公室陈主任告诉记者，对举报反映的颜智远超生的问题仍在调查中。“按规定，调查中的案件不便对外透露。”他建议记者到宣传部门了解。陆丰市委宣传部一位领导告诉南方农村报记者，此事仍在调查中，宣传部将督促纪委尽快调查清楚，并将调查结果及时向记者通报。

颜智远的户籍资料显示，其名下有两名小孩：儿子颜某野出生于1990年12月，女儿颜某雨出生于1992年3月，两个小孩的出生年月与网帖举报的相符。颜智庆的户口簿上共有5个小孩，其中4个小孩出生于1981年至1986年间，第五个小孩颜某盛出生于1994年。颜智庆户籍资料显示，颜某盛2000年6月19日才“出生申报”入户，与其出生日相隔6年。对于“把儿子颜某盛挂在颜智庆名下”的质疑，颜智远回应，“挂在谁名下，就是谁的小孩。”
举报者陈登明(化名)告诉记者，即便颜智远只超生一个小孩，也违反了国家计划生育法规，但颜智远不仅没有受到处罚，这几年还一路高升。陈登明告诉记者，颜智远2005年前担任陆丰市林业局人秘股股长，2005年起任林业局副局长，2008年至今任林业局局长。按照有关规定，国家干部每次提拔任用前，都要进行计划生育审查。“他每次提拔任用前有没有进行计生审查，如何审查的？”
