北京市文物鉴定委员会委员、北京石刻艺术博物馆副研究员刘卫东先生表示，通过查看资料图片，初步判断被拆的望柱和栏板是出自晚清或民国时期的青石雕刻，望柱柱头为石榴造型，其底座上雕有云纹，整体雕刻造型圆润、饱满，但因年代久远，多处存在破损。
同时，今年2月左右，南湖岛涵虚堂南侧月台上一云龙纹望柱头被盗，至今下落未明。目前，该处还没有安放复原的柱头，其四周仍被维修工棚遮挡。

拆卸系修缮破损石栏
颐和园管理处相关负责人回应称，颐和园正对南湖岛全面大修，维修方案已经过文物专家论证并得到国家文物局批准。最近一次大规模修整南湖岛沿湖栏板是在1954年，因年代已久，栏板多处存在风化、酥碱、歪闪和破损，其中以十七孔桥南北两侧最为严重，并存在安全隐患。10月14日，工程部门将破损严重的两块栏板和一根望柱暂时拆卸，按照文物修缮程序进行编号、装箱。
在南湖岛修缮期间，为尽量降低修缮对游览造成不便，颐和园采用分区修缮、分区游览的措施，利用拆卸栏板空间，为游客开辟临时通道，疏导从南岸下来的游客离开。大修将于明年下半年结束，竣工后，全岛沿湖栏板将全部修正归安，“包括安放此前被偷的复原望柱头”。
