2013年5月5号，天价招待费事件改革曝光，《天下公司》记者第一时间联系到了原中国铁建的赵广发。当时，这位中国铁建股份有限公司官网上显示为公司总裁职务的高管，接受采访时情绪异常激动，回应说这些纯属扯淡。

经济之声《天下公司》节目连续追问，始终没有得到中国铁建的正面回复。不过这一事件成为当时公众最为关注的社会事件之一，众多媒体纷纷跟进，网络评论铺天盖地。作为央企，向公众公开财务收支本就是其应尽的义务，而如此巨额的业务招待费究竟招待了谁？怎么招待的？其中是否有腐败问题？社会公众及普通投资者迫切希望得到一个答复。
炙热的社会关注和热议，引起了中央纪委的高度重视。在昨天的发布会上，国务院国资委纪委书记强卫东说，中纪委以及国资委对于媒体报道的“中国铁建天价招待费”一事十分重视，相关督导组4次前往中国铁建督促企业开展检查。
在中央纪委的指导下，国资委督导组先后四次赴中国铁建完善方案、开展检查、重点核查、严肃问责，中国铁建成立专项检查工作小组，对于所有单笔金额1000以上的支出，逐笔审核，涉及2012年和2013上半年业务招待费14.22万笔，发票15万多张，金额4.57亿元。
在此之后，中国铁建成立专项调查组，开始对全部36家二级公司及其所属开支最大的1家三级公司进行检查。国务院国资委纪委书记强卫东说，尽管招待费支出总体上符合规定，但确实存不少问题。
