徐显明说，再过15天，就是我来山大任校长满五年的日子，但从今天起，我将要结束我的校长生涯，要离开我心爱的山大。此时此刻，我确实是感慨万千，觉得纵然有千言万语也无法表达我对山大的留恋之情，对教育事业的热爱之情。
但是临别之际，我想还是应该讲几句告别大家的话。
第一句话，大学精神是大学的第一财富。对于一所新建的大学来说，校长的主要责任是追寻大学之道，而对于像山大这样的百年老校，守护大学精神是校长的基本职责。创新是大学的灵魂，守成则是大学的脚跟，守住了大学精神，这所大学才会有德性，才会有思想，才会吸引人才，才会培养出杰出人才，才会被社会所尊重。在这个意义上，校长的一项重要任务是做象牙塔尖上的哨兵。五年来，我为恢复山大的传统，为光大山大的传统，为守护山大的传统，使山东大学成为一所具有大学精神的大学做了努力。尽管做得不够，但是我用心了。我追求卓越，但是我未能追求完美，这是我的不足。
第二句话，功成不必在我。我感谢山大，山大给了我两次机会，1985年到2001年，我从一名青年教师成长为一位大学副校长；2008年至今，山东大学让我施展抱负与理想，我正在与大家一起做山东大学“天大的事”——建设世界一流大学，也正在与大家一起做山东大学“地大的事”——建设青岛校区，构建山大系统。但是遗憾的是，我不能和大家一起实践这两张蓝图了。功成不必在我，但功成必在大家，我希望在青岛校区建成的时候，在山大跨入世界一流大学门槛的时候，我能再有机会回到山大，与大家一起面向大海，拥抱春暖花开。
第三句话，后任必定胜过前任。张荣校长出身名校，南京大学与山东大学有诸多相似之处，也有诸多的历史渊源。1937年抗战爆发后山东大学在内迁的时候，曾经被并入到中央大学(南京大学前身)；1952年齐鲁大学被撤销的时候，一部分学科被并入到南京大学，其中包括物理学科。所以张校长的出身已经与山大有了诸多联系。张校长年富力强，比五年前我来山大的时候还小两岁。张校长有广阔的国际视野，他本人有在美国名校留学的经历，又长期分管外事等党政工作，他的到来必定使我校的国际化水平大幅度提升。我希望大家能够像支持我一样支持张校长，我坚信后任干得必定比前任更强。
第四句话，我没离开教育。我的根在山大，我的心在山东，我的魂在教育。我将从事的新工作可能是另一种形式的教育，高等教育是普通教育，我将从事的新的工作是一种特殊的教育。我离开了大学，但是我离不开教育，我会一如既往地以一个“教育人”的理想，以一个“教育者”的立场和方法继续从事另一种教育，为教育战线增光，为山大增光。
万般情感，化为四个“永远”——我永远感恩山大！我永远以在山大的两段经历为自豪！我永远怀念我的同事们！我永远是山大人！
当日，新人山东大学校长张荣对徐显明同志表示良好的祝愿，并邀请他常回山大，继续关心和支持山大。
