记者看到，原地正在建一个商业地产项目。公园旧址的西侧，一幢规划五星级酒店的百米毛坯大楼拔地而起，东侧则为“希尔顿一品国际”的商业住宅开发项目。
而类似“短命工程”并非一例。据了解，新野县年财政收入仅有3.8亿元。据记者核实，自2010年来，这个县随意更改规划，重复建设毁掉的项目多达5个，项目总造价超亿元。
2012年5月，新野县启动城区三国大道改造工程总投资1600万元。群众反映，该路段改造前使用不足6年。

知情者称途经公墓“不吉利”
城北公园被毁开发成商业项目后，新野县规划、国土等相关部门负责人都声称，“压根就没有修建城北公园的规划，毁的只是绿化的苗圃。”
而当地群众游玩时拍摄的照片显示，在公共休闲场所缺乏的新野，建有景观灯、路桥、假山等设施的城北公园曾经是群众赏花、遛狗、放松身心之处。
悬挂在新野县住建局办公室的一幅2011年地图中，如今被开发成新野国际大酒店、希尔顿一品国际等商业项目的位置被明确标明为“城北公园”；而南阳市住建委所属的一家网站信息也显示，2007年12月新野县曾发布“城北公园及三里河景观带绿化苗木招标书”。
城北公园被毁是否有规划依据？人民路改造造价缘何多出3倍多？以堤代路的滨河路改造是否经过“防评”？
新野县城乡建设规划局相关负责人多次以“这个我不清楚，我解释不了”回应记者采访。
当地知情人士透露，在上述被毁工程中，重修三国大道是因改造路段经过该县三里河公墓，对县里新规划的行政新区“不吉利”；滨河路河堤段改造是因路面向河堤里内移可为政府腾出千余亩建设用地；而人民路改造成本翻了3倍多，事后当地一些官员因涉贪污受贿而锒铛入狱；城北公园被毁后，截至目前，当地政府已拍卖出数百亩土地。

新路没修好就停工，老路路况尚好却遭废弃，有网友调侃新野县修路是“用一条，摆一条”。
2010年，流经新野县城的白河洪水漫堤，当地居民深受洪水侵扰。而2012年以堤代路的滨河路改造时居然又向堤内迁移了数十米。许多居民担心，如今大堤内移，一旦洪水爆发，不仅堤路两毁，群众的安危也难保。紧邻滨河路的航运西区居民史忠义说，“原来这条路挺好，不知为啥又重修，净是劳民伤财！”
乔续功是毗邻城北公园乔营村的老村干部。据其介绍，2007年，新野县曾以建设城北公园及三里河景观带为由将这个村的土地征收殆尽。如今建成的公园被毁变成了商业项目，他说，“拆了建、建了拆，浪费了这么多钱，把老百姓的地折腾没了，也折腾穷了，这就叫穷折腾！”
记者在当地媒体“新野网事”发现，早在2010年人民路改造时，当地群众就曾对政府盲目的重复建设产生争论。该网站发起的网民投票中，九成以上的网民都认为，“无论是在质量和实际需求上，人民路都没必要改造和升级”，从而选择了“钱要用到关键处，建议再充分考虑”的选项。但群众的建议没能阻止人民路巨额改造工程。
记者了解到，目前滨河大道建设已停工。
