A small symbol, change Twitter Kingdom of destiny

A small symbol changed Twitter destiny of the Kingdom of-Twitter, Twitter,-IT information A small symbol, change Twitter Kingdom of destiny

Just listed on the Twitter, # (hashtag, topic tags) can be said is the cornerstone of the entire Kingdom of Twitter, this symbol was born in 2007 on the Twitter is now ubiquitous, more habit has changed the way people share information over the Internet.

Today, the most influential social networks, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and has just joined Facebook without # feature is not supported.

A topic label, runs through the same conversation on Twitter, turn otherwise unrelated people, because the same thing while connected.

Dare say, if no one has invented the "#" usage, probably today, Twitter has a whole new ballgame. Emergence of the topic label, is an interesting story.

First invention topic labels on Twitter usage called Chris · Messina (Chris Messina), he is an advocate of open source geeks and hackers Conference BarCamp founder, a good relationship with the media.

In August 2007, he was raised in a Tweet "#" usage:

BarCamp Conference Tweet together using "#BarCamp" how to unify the subject?

Chris is intended, in a simple way, connects the geeks on the BarCamp news. And when his Nokia mobile phone, most likely to press the special symbol, is located on the keyboard on the edge of the "#" key. Can be said that the birth of this usage, over countless fans long for group chat on Twitter these days.

But should have wrote the pioneering work, at the beginning, once regarded as a joke.

As far as Chris recalls, we are not ready for this kind of games are played from the start, many people think that it is a very stupid thing: Twitter was ugly enough, could you append a bunch of Mars symbol.

Even then, that Chris has personally visited Twitter team to promote the topic label concept, founder of Bizi·sitong and Aiwen·weilianmusi is buying it, in their view, this usage is prepared for technology, weird, but in mainstream social space, this little "#" never caught on.

Twitter was disdain for topic tags, they think there's a better place information practices, such as adding new algorithms, add a group chat functionality for users. Chris founders assured: "trust us, you don't need to carry a '#' communication with people. ”

But Chris has his own ideas, he still insists on promotion of the more populist, effective practices, Chris began publishing articles promoting benefits topic tags, set up a "# channel", then there is the mail, information, Google Docs file name ... ... Chris found under the topic tags help, search has become even more powerful.

Soon, people around Chris found that topic tags have become ubiquitous.

However, a natural disaster may end up #--this is ignored by industry heavyweights were obscure symbols, overnight became key key sets in the dissemination of information.

On October 21, 2007 in United States San Diego fire, is United States history area is the most widespread and longest burning fire. Estimated losses of $ 6 million, get the attention of people across America, a man named naite·liteer (Nate Ritter) for young people to become witnesses of the fire.

22nd, Ritter disaster on Twitter made a article about Santiago's Twitter:

OK, now I will live here live San Diego fires.

Ritter moves accidentally played the biggest role of the media, his Twitter received the attention of television, radio, Ritter more alone in the frontline to receive first-hand information, for those who might otherwise be spread to residents, provides a great deal of help.

But on the Web, only 350 fans Ritter, whose influence remains limited.

At this time, Chris had once again become the main thread of the story. Chris Ritter is known in the BraCamp of the original buddy, in view of this, Chris immediately leave a message on Twitter: "heard the topic label it? Hurry up before the in your Tweets and #sandiegofire! ”

An hour later, #sandiegofire began to appear in this fire frontline broadcast on Twitter. Soon, other netizens, they started on the pushing in connection with the fire, joined the same topic tags.

The topic tags brought about by the sheer speed of change, people get disaster updates on Twitter, start from individuals like Ritter, conversion to a topic on the circle.

Chris recalls: "fire to obtain the latest news, we were planning to go, at least 14 different sites, still depends on TV and radio. "But now whenever I search sandiegofires on Twitter, all the information in one place.

It is clear that topic tag performance in the fire, forever changed Twitter executives to the "grassroots inventions" have a change of heart. In 2009, Twitter officially absorbed the idea of Chris, and give the topic tags hyperlinks, and using algorithms and statistics in real time the most popular topic, appears in the user's home page. Later, this small symbol to bring Twitter change more dramatic, topic tags Super message collection into the social networking platform, the Internet began to have a formal "topic" concept, Twitter won the ability to detonate potent issue worldwide.

Because of this influence, Kingdom of the world people invariably joined Twitter this information, but then we have the Arab spring, jieke·duoxi and United States presidential challenge on the same stage, let alone brought a bonanza to Twitter Topic Tags ads.

Just imagine, if not this easy, "#", but their top executives, "join a chat group" approach, Twitter is likely to fall short of today's height.

Which is committed to promoting the standard of Chris · Messina, become a hero behind this successful scene. Of course, you may also wish to be just like other Twitterers, #ThankYouMessina with the topic label, to the "#" the father of compliments, thank him for his contribution to the world of information flows.
