China， the highest number of votes were elected members of the UN Human Rights Council

Xinhuanet,, November 12 (reporters Ni Hongmei and Wang Lei)-68th 12th parliamentary election of the General Assembly of the United Nations Human Rights Council, China by 176 votes to be elected, term in 2014 to 2016.

China's Deputy Permanent Representative Wang Min said after the election, the Chinese Government attaches great importance to the promotion and protection of human rights and had made significant achievements, and actively carry out international cooperation in the field of human rights. China were elected members of the UN Human Rights Council worthy. The high votes, further illustrates the international community's high recognition of China's great achievements in the field of human rights.

Wang Min said that the Chinese side thanked all the precious support to China's campaign. China will actively participate in the work of the United Nations Human Rights Council, to play a constructive role to promote dialogue, cooperation and opposing confrontation, pressure, to make greater contributions to the healthy development of the international cause of human rights.

In this election, elected concurrently with the Chinese are Russia and the United Kingdom, and France, Cuba, South Africa, and Saudi Arabia in 13 countries.

The Human Rights Council was established in March 2006, formerly known as the United Nations Commission on human rights. The Human Rights Council is the principal human rights organ of the United Nations, with its headquarters in Geneva. Council consists of 47 seats, with 13 seats each from Asia and Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean 8 seats, 6 seats in Eastern Europe, Western Europe and other region 7 seats.

Re-election one-third per cent per year in the General Assembly of the members of the Council. The members of the Council for a term of three years, up to a second term. Interval should be a year after two consecutive terms in order to find new term of Office. China has served in 2006 as a member of the Human Rights Council.

　　中国常驻联合国副代表王民在选举结束后表示，中国政府高度重视促进和保护人权并取得了显著成绩，同时积极开展人权领域国际合作。中国当选联合国人权理事会成员名符其实。此次高票当选进一步充分说明了国际社会对中国在人权领域取得巨大成就的高度肯定。

　　王民说，中方感谢各国对中国竞选的宝贵支持。中国将积极深入参与联合国人权理事会工作，发挥建设性作用，推动对话、合作，反对对抗、施压，为国际人权事业的健康发展作出更大贡献。

　　本次改选中，与中国同时当选的还有俄罗斯、英国、法国、古巴、南非、沙特阿拉伯等13个国家。

　　人权理事会于2006年3月建立，其前身是联合国人权委员会。人权理事会是联合国主要人权机构，总部设在日内瓦。理事会共设47个席位，其中亚洲和非洲各占13席，拉美及加勒比地区占8席，东欧占6席，西欧和其他地区占7席。

　　联大每年改选三分之一左右的理事会成员。理事会成员每届任期三年，最多可连任一次。连续两任后须间隔一年方可寻求新任期。中国曾在2006年至2012年担任人权理事会成员。
