据台湾“中央社”报道，连战办公室发布新闻稿指出，连战应邀访美，除接受中美政策基金会颁赠终身成就奖外，并表专题演讲。连战在演说中提及2005年的“和平之旅”，并与当时的中共中央总书记胡锦涛会面后，达成“胡连会”五点和平愿景共识。这五项和平愿景共识替两岸合作交流打下了基础工作，为台海带来了和平发展的契机。
连战称，2008年5月后，两岸在文化、观光、旅游、贸易、农业及教育等各方面交流都有了显著进展；2010年两岸更签订了前所未有的经济合作协议。
连战称，两岸坚持“一个中国原则”，台湾与大陆同属一个中国。在此原则下，两岸关系建立在“一个中国架构”的基础上，而非“国与国”关系上。同时也强调，“九二共识”为两岸政治互信基础，必须共同维护。
连战希望，先求同存异，搁置争议，以待未来发展更有意义、更具建设性的两岸关系；两岸应结束敌对并逐渐化解争议。习近平也认为两岸中国人为命运共同体。
