在15日的记者会上，中国外交部发言人洪磊透露称，10月31日，日本籍游客樱木琢磨因在广州白云机场携带毒品出境被中国公安机关刑事拘留，现关押在广东省看守所。中国公安机关及时将上述情况通报日本驻广州总领馆，日方已派领事官员前往探视。目前此案正在进一步调查中。日本外务省表示，中国《刑法》规定走私毒品是重罪，最高可至死刑。据悉，樱木本人否认涉嫌携带毒品。
据稻泽市议会方面介绍，樱木在没有请假的情况下缺席了11月1日该市的活动和委员会会议，之后一直联系不上。5日下午，樱木的女儿联系议会事务局称“父亲去中国，遇到了麻烦，好像被拘留在广州的看守所里”。直到14日下午2时左右，市议会事务局接到来自外务省的消息称，“在中国机场，有日本男子因涉嫌携带毒品被当场逮捕”。
据悉，樱木前往中国可能与他经营的贸易公司工作有关。
