2013年11月15日22时零5分，中国著名作曲家陶嘉舟在成都家中，因突发心脏病，经医生抢救无效逝世，享年80岁。
李双江演唱的经典歌曲《船工号子》，作曲者就是陶嘉舟。得知陶嘉舟去世，李双江和梦鸽夫妇俩十分悲痛。李双江不仅委托朋友送了花圈，还亲自为陶嘉舟撰写了富有诗意、真情感人的悼词。
灵堂布置很简朴《船工号子》代哀乐
在成都江天路陶嘉舟的家中，陶嘉舟的灵堂布置得很简朴。
四川省音协李晓明撰写的挽联十分醒目：“ 大师仙逝音容遗蜀山川江船歌成绝唱，一路走好笑貌常在茲不朽韵律凭回想。”
灵堂周围，摆放着社会各界送来的花圈。四川省音协主席敖昌群及大批川音教授、学生以及陶嘉舟生前好友，前来悼念。

陶嘉舟的夫人艾开伶告诉华西都市报记者，得知先生陶嘉舟去世，国内外的许多好朋友发来了唁电。特别感人的是：好朋友李双江和梦鸽夫妇俩，得知陶嘉舟去世，很快通过手机短信发了悼词。悼词是李双江亲自写的，很感人。
在场的许多悼念者，听了李双江发来的悼词，评价很高。认为李双江对朋友感情真诚。悼词写得感人而有诗意，显示出李双江的良好的文学修养。
艾开伶说，李双江和梦鸽夫妇俩，对作曲家特别尊重。认识三十多年来，过年过节，他们常打电话慰问。到了成都，他们一定会来看我们。
李双江独家接受了华西都市报记者采访说，“自己本该亲赴成都，为嘉舟兄弟送行，但家事难缠，唯有向夫嫂致歉意。”
身体一直都很好常骑车锻炼身体
艾开伶向华西都市报记者讲述了陶嘉舟生命的最后日子：“陶嘉舟今年刚80岁。几天前，他还在积极创作音乐作品，一直想为四川写一首新民歌《锦绣四川我的美丽家乡》，可曲子才写了个开头，他就突然走了。老伴，我心里好悲痛啊！”
艾开伶说，陶嘉舟身体一直都很好，去世前没生病。他经常骑自行车锻炼身体。这段时间，陶嘉舟一直在为一位朋友策划新年音乐会。
“11月15日晚上9时30分，老陶坐在沙发上边吃苹果，边看电视。突然他大叫了一声，说：‘我心口好痛啊！’倒在沙发上，不醒人事。”艾开伶立即拨打了120，经医生多次抢救，陶嘉舟还是没有站起来，“晚上10点零5分，老陶停止了呼吸，和我生活了半辈子的他，就这样离开了我……”传奇人生
没上过音乐学院却成中国一级作曲家
陶嘉舟1933年生于四川苍溪，16岁参军。他没上过专业音乐学院，在部队的培养下，成为国家一级作曲家。他是中国音乐家协会会员，中国电影乐学会理事，中国电影家协会会员，四川音协、影协理事。陶嘉舟桃李满天下。总政歌舞团著名作曲家刘青，是他的得意学生。
各类作品近千件曾受到周总理赞誉
艾开伶说：“陶嘉舟已发表、上演、广播、出版各类作品近千件。为七十多部影视剧创作歌曲。”歌曲《革命熔炉火最红》，受周恩来总理赞誉，曾两次推荐给全国人民演唱。彭丽媛、李谷一、张也等演唱过他的歌。
创办国内首家流行音乐演艺人才学校
1993年春，陶嘉舟和夫人创办国内首家专门培训流行音乐演艺人才的四川省艾开伶现代流行音乐演艺学校，已为全国各地培训出等级歌手2500余人，在全国及各省市级歌赛获奖者已500余人。
