按照Google的计划每一个参与飞行的气球都要在空中环绕地球三次,这个过程需要耗时一百天的时间。虽然一百天听上去也不是太长,但让这些气球独自在空中飘流飞过战区和海洋还要保证通讯设备完整确实是个不小的挑战。由于气球漂浮在平流层上空,所以几乎不可能派人上去修复损坏的通讯设施。
负责Google气球材料的经理Pam Desrochers表示该计划最重要的一部分就是要保证气球不至于漏气,由于气球表面积巨大——500平方米左右,这让气球破损的几率增加不少。此外伴随着日出和日落平流层内温度的骤变而引发的气球内部压强的转变也是该项目所必需面对的问题,目前的解决办法就是随着压强的升高或者降低不断地改变气球内部的气体密度。
频繁地改变气球内部的气体密度又会使气球材料不断地拉伸或收缩,虽然“潜鸟计划”使用的气球材料是超压力气球所使用的聚乙烯泡沫,相对于气象气球的材料更耐久。但Desrochers自己也表示:当你不断地拉伸它时,它最终还是会破裂。特别是当气球处在寒冷的环境下,一次猛烈的拉伸就会让材料直接碎掉。
当“潜鸟计划”在新西兰进行首次实验时,Google使用的气球材料就是上文提到的聚乙烯材质,不过看起来这项材料并不是最好的选择,接下来Google或将要对多种多样的材料进行耐久性、温度和泄漏测试。材料问题仅是该项目所面临的诸多问题之一,“潜鸟计划”想最后能为网络不便地区的居住民提供因特网接入服务,还需要继续努力。
