　　据相关人士透露，樱木10月29日前往中国，原定31日回国，但当天在机场接受手持行李检查时被拘留。他表示装有毒品的行李箱是生意中认识的尼日利亚男子的妻子交给他的。

　　据悉，樱木对探视他的日本外务省官员称“我是无辜的，不会辞去市议员职务”。

　　中国外交部发言人洪磊在15日的例行记者会上表示，10月31日，日本籍游客樱木琢磨因在广州白云机场携带毒品出境被中国公安机关刑事拘留，现关押在广东省看守所。中国公安机关及时将上述情况通报日本驻广州总领馆，日方已派领事官员前往探视。目前此案正在进一步调查中。
