Recently Google released the Google Earth picture of first show within ten years of deforestation in the world map. This is Google and the University of Maryland, United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the United States Geological Survey Institute of cooperation results. 该项目的领导人员，马里兰大学资深地理科学教授Matthew Hansen这样描述：我们希望人们能够有效利用这个地图，从而发现隐藏在其中的新信息，甚至于将其利用到我们都无法预计的项目中去。这个特殊的工具能够使公众更加清晰的认识到当今世界上的森林砍伐情况，并且很容易触动人们为保护森林做些事情。
这个工具其实是在654178张卫星图片的基础上得到的，正是由于其信息量巨大，所以需要极其强大的CPU处理能力，需要一台计算机运行15年才可以完成信息处理。从另一个角度来说，正是得益于计算机技术的飞速发展，才有可能出现信息量如此庞大、分辨率如此之高的地图。
这张地图除了分辨率高之外，最大可以放大到实际距离30米。利用这张地图可以清晰的查看因伐木、自然灾害等造成的森林退化现象，而图片中红色部分则代表森林面积流失。
