起火的银杏树前有一块3米高的大石，赫然写着“千年银杏”四个红字。
居民罗阿姨说，前天来了一批工人，说这棵千年银杏树干都空了，需要修复，脚手架都搭起来了。

此地原有古寺延寿庵，建于吴越(约公元934年)，地处东城门外，“弥望皆菜圃”。据传说，该树为当年庵内第一代师太所栽。古寺曾毁于战火，明万历年间重建，并易名“莲居庵”，该寺声名鹊起，有“莲居晚磬”之誉，清代文人厉鹗在《东城杂记》“莲居”篇中这样赞它：“绿荫满阶，苔痕常如雨过，妙香时闻，翛然有出尘之想矣。”可以想见当时古树枝繁叶茂、葱葱郁郁的盛景。延寿庵毁于民国初年。
全杭州树龄1000年以上的古树共有8棵，最年长的是五云山顶的银杏树，树龄近1500年；离它不远的云栖竹径景区里，还有5棵稍微“年轻”一点的千年枫香。另外，还有两棵千年香樟，一棵唐樟，一棵宋樟，都长在法相寺边。但在人烟稠密的闹市区，“千年银杏”就仅此一棵。
