After the closure of the round table, Liu has seen China Scholarship Council signed memorandum of understanding on cooperation with the University of Chicago. 　　刘延东在中美高水平大学校长圆桌会上发表主旨讲话

　　新华网芝加哥11月18日电 中国国务院副总理刘延东18日在芝加哥中美高水平大学校长圆桌会议上发表题为《携手共创中美两国大学的美好未来》的主旨讲话。

　　刘延东说，中美大学的合作交流搭建起了两国友谊的桥梁，成为人文交流中最为密切、最有成效的领域之一，对促进中美关系发挥了独特作用。目前，中国在美留学生总数已达23.5万，连续4年成为美最大的留学生来源国。美国“十万强”计划也推动6.8万美国青年到中国留学交流。中美建交35年来，两国大学从留学互派到合作办学，从学术交流到科研协作，各方面合作呈现出前所未有的良好格局。

　　刘延东表示，当前中美关系处于承前启后、继往开来的重要历史时期，希望中美大学挖掘合作潜力，在相互启迪中激发创造，在包容互鉴中共同发展。一要发挥大学在人文交流中的桥梁作用。两国7000多所大学，5000多万学生，所释放出的人文交流能量是何等壮观！应创造条件，鼓励两国大学建立制度化的沟通平台，开辟全方位的交往渠道，成为两国人文交流的牢固纽带。

　　二要发挥大学在构建中美新型大国关系中的智库作用。大学是人类思想的“梦工厂”，也是国家的天然智库。希望两国大学就构建中美新型大国关系联合研究，引导社会各界理性看待彼此，为两国政府决策提供高质量的智力成果。

　　三要发挥大学在应对全球共同挑战中的推动作用。希望两国大学以新的视野，新的智慧，携手并肩，共同努力，为应对共同挑战作出更大的贡献。我相信，只要以心相交，以诚相待，互学互鉴，两国大学就一定能携手开创更加美好的未来，为构建中美新型大国关系作出更大的贡献。

　　圆桌会结束后，刘延东见证了中国国家留学基金委与芝加哥大学签署合作谅解备忘录。来自北京大学、上海交通大学、复旦大学、美国芝加哥大学、华盛顿大学、莱斯大学等23所中美著名大学的校长参加上述活动。

　　当天，刘延东还参观了芝加哥校外活动中心总部，与那里的师生们进行了友好互动。
