必应究竟能够在多大程度上影响微软公司产品的发展前景并不是个能够简单回答的问题。与此同时，笔者认为微软对于必应的定位更多的是别有用心，微软希望通过对必应形象的全新塑造使得其成为市场中的“香饽饽”，而到时候微软就可以轻松出售必应以此抬升自身的股价。
上周笔者参加了在纽约召开的一个小范围的商业内幕会议，在这次会议上著名技术工程师詹姆斯-惠特克（James Whittaker）对必应未来的影响力给予了解读，而笔者对此可以说是受益匪浅。
惠特克曾经从微软公司出走转投谷歌的麾下，而后又回到了微软。惠特克目前在微软公司内部是一名推广团队的工程师，而在加入这个全新的推广团队之前，惠特克曾经担任微软知识平台的研发经理，而该知识平台正是必应团队组成的一部分。
在长达20分钟的发言中，惠特克位为在场的与会者解释了实体关系以及机器学习的含义，这两个概念在惠特克过往的发言中从来没被提到过，而它们也是笔者觉得最为晦涩难懂的概念之一。惠特克在发言中提到：“在长达数十年的搜索研究工作中我们已经积累了丰富的知识，然而在现实生活中我们在一些特殊的时候还是需要浏览器或者是搜索引擎来处理问题。”惠特克还强调称，为何应用程序本身只能被当作是名词来看待，而我们的生活中为何就一定要使用应用程序呢？笔者认为惠特克发表上述言论的目的并不是为了提到微软在Windows 8.1当中所整合的必应智能搜索功能，他所想要表达的是更深层次的东西——应用程序的“必应化”。
在本次会议上，惠特克展示了一款由他和几位麻省理工学院的实习生共同开发的内嵌应用程序的企业版Outlook。就像微软的Word一样能够自动在拼写错误的单次下加上波浪线以示提醒一样，惠特克等人开发的企业版Outlook能够向用户展示一些包含在邮件内容中的资讯内容，比如乐队、演出场地、附近的宾馆等等。
实体提示卡片（Entity cards）的概念其实并不是新生事物。事实上，早在2009年微软就在必应的网络搜索服务中加入了实体提示卡片的概念。此次惠特克所展示的新版Outlook不仅仅是在浏览器或者是搜索引擎进行了调整，其已经开始向应用程序领域渗透。举个例子来说，在一个由必应进行支撑的服务环境下，用户只需提出“我想度假”的要求并将其传送到特别的指定设备中就能够激活一系列活动。比如，在接到“度假”的命令之后用户设备中的日历便可自行搜索游览场馆的开放时间、确定飞机航班并且允许用户通过指定设备预定航班和酒店等等。
惠特克表示如今搜集资讯信息的设备除了传统的个人电脑和手机以外还增加了许多新型的可穿戴设备。他还表示我们每个人应当成为信资讯信息的狩猎者和搜集者——从应用软件中“狩猎”信息，从传统网页中搜集信息。
