　　记者从綦江区委宣传部获悉，此次发现的木化石位于古剑山海拔800多米的公路断面上，保存情况较完好，初步判定形成时间为侏罗纪晚期。此次发现木化石的地点属于以老瀛山为核心的国家地质公园。该公园内有着丰富的恐龙化石遗存，也曾发现大量木化石。

　　綦江木化石－恐龙足迹地质公园于2009年入选国家地质公园，地处扬子地台东部，在地形上表现为由盆地丘陵向边缘山区过渡的特点。地质公园由木化石景区、恐龙足迹景区和丹霞地貌景区三部分组成，面积约108平方公里。

　　考古专家指出，恐龙曾在这一区域繁衍生息，当时这里是茂密森林，经过地壳运动和水流冲刷后，树木倒下并沉积，深埋地下，形成了木化石。大量木化石的发现也证明这里是恐龙的聚集区。此外，木化石对研究当时的环境气候和地理特征也具有重要价值。

　　据悉，綦江区出土的木化石的分布面积在西南地区仅次于四川江安夕家山硅化木群。
