　　平泉县林业局营林站工程师刘常英介绍说，古树群坐落于松树台乡小西梁村大杖子后山，平均树高10－15米，冠幅最大达15米。林中五角枫小树密布丛生，经鉴定，属纯原始自然林。

　　五角枫在当地被称为“色树”。秋霜过后，五角枫依其树龄不同，叶片颜色各异，就是同一株上老枝与新梢上的叶片颜色也不相同，常常是一株五角枫，叶片分出十几种色彩，极具观赏价值。

　　“五角枫这个树种在平泉县分布比较多，但是发现这么大面积而且树龄又这么长的树群还是比较罕见。”刘常英说。

　　目前，平泉县林业部门已经对这片古树群建立了电子档案，同时积极采取措施进行保护，设立“平泉县古树群”标志的保护碑，并安排专人管护。
