　　思茅区位于云南省南部、澜沧江中下游，目前仅野生亚洲象就有38头。

　　大象的活动导致当地人象矛盾越来越突出。据思茅区林业局局长李益川介绍，2012年仅“大象肇事”就有231起，甚至发生村民被大象袭击致死的事件。

　　据了解，面对日益频发的人象矛盾，思茅区规划在澜沧江畔的思茅港建设3900亩的“大象食堂”基地，预计总投资将达260万元。目前，一期工程800亩已于6月开始建设，目前400亩芭蕉已栽种完成，400亩竹子将于明年开春后栽种，一期工程还将配套建设人工盐巴池塘等设施，预计投资58万元。

　　“我们计划在大象活动的范围，集中种植一些大象喜欢吃的植物，如竹子、野芭蕉等，再加上固定放置一些盐，把大象活动相对控制在一定范围内，给大象提供一个生活的食物来源地，也就是‘建立大象食堂’。”李益川说，以此实现既保护大象又最大限度减少大象对当地群众生产生活影响的目的，缓解人象矛盾。
