在工作人员的引领下，记者在乌江索拉大桥下看到了一根乌木，整体呈黑色，但隐约可见泛黄的树色，经现场测量，树长约6米，最粗处直径达80厘米，最细处直径也有50厘米。“这棵树存活时高度至少在20米以上。”一位内行估计。
另外，还有多根乌木则堆放在乌江渡码头工程办事处，同样很粗大。令人称奇的是，其中一块乌木表面光洁，状若根雕，且色泽乌黑发亮，工作人员说，洗净后摆在那儿，就是一天然根雕作品。
乌江社区有关负责人告诉记者，2个月前，为了方便乌江渡码头工地工程车通行，施工方决定在乌江索拉大桥下的泥泞中搭建一座简易桥，施工中，挖掘机在泥土里先后挖出了这些乌木。
当地乌木何其多
乌江镇林业部门工作人员告诉记者，乌木出土后，他们到现场查看，认为这些乌木应该是“水红树”。这种树是最好的家具用木，但由于太硬，传统的木匠不愿意用这种树制作家具，“水红树”在过去一般只用来做木工工具之类的小物件。工作人员说，“水红树”产量很少，要数百年才能成材，因此十分珍贵。

一位工人说，此前看过媒体报道，对乌木有所了解，因此，当时挖到第一根乌木后，大家都很兴奋，小心翼翼清除了周围的泥土后，众人合力抬到干燥地带，但实在太沉了，至少有几吨重，最后在挖掘机的帮助下，才成功移动了乌木。
据了解，乌江发现乌木已不是第一次，去年7月有施工单位在乌江河滩亦挖掘出了4根粗大的乌木，但由于当时人们对乌木的价值认识不够，这些乌木被随意丢弃在野外，被人悄悄运走。
依照规定收归国有
乌江镇政府有关负责人说，此次出土的乌木，一度引起当地村民的哄抢，有人欲先下手为强，租来货车已将其中一根粗大的乌木装上车，但驶离时，坡度较大，乌木从货箱中滚落，再欲装车时，被闻讯赶来的当地村民制止。
由于出土乌木的地方处于两村交界，两村村民一度为了乌木的权属争得面红耳赤，期间，有外地人愿出2万元购买这些乌木，亦因权属问题之争搁浅。
为了平息村民的纷争，乌江镇政府依照相关规定，将出土的乌木收为国有。该镇有关负责人告诉记者，地底下的文物、宝藏等属于国家，任何个人不能轻举妄动。该负责人说，迹象表明，随着各种工程在乌江的动工，今后该镇还可能出土乌木，不管任何人发现，都必须交公，否则依法论处。
那么如何处置已经出土的乌木？乌江镇政府表示，将请专家进行价值评估，拟向社会公开拍卖。
