吉林省林业厅副厅长乔恒说，长白山林区东北虎、东北豹专项调查结果显示，有野生东北虎11到13只，东北豹10到13只。与1998年中、俄、美科学家在长白山林区调查发现的东北虎6到9只、东北豹3到7只相比，数量有了明显的增长。
今年10月9日，吉林省大型猫科动物监测专家组在汪清国家级自然保护区成功拍摄到1只东北豹带着两只6个月大的幼豹影像；11月6日，专家组又在珲春林业局发现1只东北虎带着3只幼虎活动的足迹。这些大型猫科动物带着幼仔行踪的发现在我国尚属首次。
专家组依据发现地至中俄边境最近距离、幼仔的大小以及雌性虎、豹带幼仔最大活动半径等元素判断，一致认为吉林省长白山林区东北虎、东北豹栖息地经过多年保护和恢复有了较大程度改善，珲春、汪清地区已经成为我国最重要的东北虎、东北豹繁殖地，也是我国野生虎豹种群恢复与发展的希望所在。
东北虎是世界十大濒危野生动物之一，目前仅存不到500只，主要分布在俄罗斯远东地区和我国东北山林中。我国野生东北虎数量不足20只，栖息在黑龙江省和吉林省东部的长白山区。东北豹（属金钱豹东北亚种）是目前世界上最为濒危的大型猫科动物亚种之一，被世界自然保护联盟濒危动物红皮书列为极危物种，其野生数量只有50只左右，大部分生活在中俄边境地带。
