中午12时24分，宁波鄞州消防官兵在接到报警后，立即调派三辆消防车赶赴现场进行救援。
12时34分，消防官兵赶到现场时发现，煤气管道泄漏点位于医院的北门内。此时，泄漏点的煤气正发出“咝咝”的声音，消防官兵立即对围观的群众进行劝说离开，并组织出两只水枪对泄漏点进行稀释。10分钟后，煤气公司到达现场关闭了阀门。消防人员则在煤气公司关闭管道之后，依然对其进行稀释，直到探测仪煤气浓度降到安全值，才结束。
事后经了解，当时明州医院北门内的医疗器械房和门诊部之间的水泥路面正在进行开挖整修。报警人楚先生当时正在操作挖掘机。尽管现场有煤气公司的警示牌，但施工方却视而不见，依然违规操作。当挖掘机挖入地下50公分不到时便直接挖到了煤气管道，煤气管道瞬间被挖掘机挖破了大约2公分的口子。
幸运的是，事发地距离住院部较远，并未对住院病人造成多大影响。
