在晋城的乡村，每年麦收后，村民习惯将小麦寄存在村子附近的面粉厂，家里没面时再拿着“兑粮本”去面粉厂按一定比例换回面粉。被淹的小麦有很大一部分正是村民们寄存的。
洪水过后，夫妇二人查看后发现，村民寄存的105万斤小麦中，有75万斤小麦完全失去食用和加工价值。按当时市场价格折算，75万斤小麦就是80万元钱！
夫妇二人不忍将10年辛苦打拼的品牌扔掉，更不忍将乡亲们的信任放弃，他们决定要把乡亲们的粮还上。随后，夫妇二人东拼西凑，凑起30多万元买回近30万斤小麦，为乡亲们还上第一批粮。
为了还剩下的粮，刘平贵继续照看面粉厂，李继林则和大女儿外出打工。一家人省吃俭用，积累下来的钱就买小麦加工成面粉，还给老乡们。
目前，他们还欠乡亲们27.875万斤小麦，折成面粉是22.3万斤。
