昆明长春山墓地于2007年被发现，随后云南飞虎队研究会发布了“昆明郊外发现500座飞虎队公墓”的消息，引起各界广泛关注。当地政府组织专家对墓地开展调查考证，发现该墓地并非“飞虎队公墓”遗址，其中安葬的是400余名在抗日战争中牺牲的中国空军飞行员和中国远征军将士遗骨。
昆明市民政局调研员魏立功介绍，发现公墓后，民政部门一直在做基础性保护工作，如定期派人到墓区巡查，清理灌木和杂草，平整塌陷墓穴。但由于年久失修、雨水冲刷、牛羊踩踏等原因，部分坟墓遭到毁坏的情况时有发生。
今年8月，“昆明飞虎公墓500英烈遗骨横陈无人管”的消息在网上流传，再次引起社会关注。此后，昆明市民政局和经开区管委会组织有关部门和专家反复勘察、研究和论证，制定了公墓修复保护方案，并得到昆明市政府批准。
昆明市民政局副局长林华介绍，依据专家组意见，公墓定名为“昆明·中国空军抗日战争阵亡将士公墓”。公墓划定修复保护范围为13.3亩，预计投入330万元，明年3月底完成修复工程，将收集零散遗骨合葬，种植草坪、开花植物和绿篱围挡，修建墓区通道，设纪念墙和祭奠平台，供公众瞻仰纪念。
