“反转”人士的一个观点是转基因食品会对民族的后代基因产生影响，甚至导致断子绝孙。罗云波教授认为，这是因为中华民族文化中有“不孝有三无后为大”，所以用断子绝孙这个话就能勾起中国人最敏感也最脆弱的神经。
罗云波表示，绝对安全的食品是没有的，而转基因食品安全性不比传统食品更低，“普通食品如果按照转基因食品那样严格的标准来检测的话，是过不了关的，比如臭豆腐、羊肉串，转基因食品是政府帮大家筛选的一道更安全的食品。”
转基因信息将逐步公开透明
昨天的活动现场，来了上百位听众，活动的主体环节是对转基因心存疑问的听众向几位“挺转”人士提问。现场针锋相对，几位专家轮番上阵，有时组团回答听众的同一个问题。
针对听众对转基因食品安全性的担忧，陈君石表示，世界上所有国家的政府对转基因食品研发都有一套严格的规定，中国也是如此。一个转基因的作物或者动物，从实验室研究开发，一直到最后上到消费者的餐桌起码要8-10年，这是一个严肃认真的过程。陈君石认为很多人的误解来自于对这些程序的了解不够，“我从官方得到的消息是，所有这些流程和程序会更加透明，逐步公开。”
有听众认为外国人不吃转基因食品，“挺转”专家进行了否认，“美国人比我们多吃了十几年，说美国人不吃转基因是瞎说的。”几位“挺转”专家都把转基因问题争议如此之大的原因归结为公众科学素养不足。
转基因不只是农业部的事
针对转基因食品的安全问题应该由哪些部门来管理的问题，陈君石表示，国务院规定农业部负责所有转基因作物和动物的研究、开发、试验等等，但卫生部门的科学家也会参与到安全性的评价中。比如中国疾病预防控制中心营养与食品安全所，还有国家食品安全风险评估中心，“所以这不仅仅是农业部或者是卫生部门的事，国务院其他部门也有参与。”

日前有媒体报道，农业部委托中国农业大学做转基因大米的小型猪90天喂养试验，试验负责人表示，试验用猪在90天喂养期间各项指标正常。有公众质疑这项试验是为了证明猪食用转基因食品安全，从而证明人食用也是安全的。
对此，农大食品科学与营养工程学院院长罗云波向北青报记者表示，这是一个误解。农大是做了猪喂养的试验，但是跟安全性没有关系。这个实验纯粹是科学家为了探索转基因技术在其他领域，比如生物制药等领域的可能用途。当时情况是，记者问实验负责人老鼠吃了转基因大米是否安全？负责人说老鼠吃了没事儿，猪吃了同样也没事儿。报道出去后，很多人就以为这个实验是通过让猪吃90天转基因大米来证明其安全性。

北青报：作为一位食品安全领域专家，你认为转基因食品安全吗？
陈君石：转基因是现代生物技术，把外来基因转到原有的东西里面。实际上，农业上任何一个新品种的出现一定是基因改变的结果，包括杂交水稻。
我们吃进去的粮食里边都有基因，到了胃里消化时是不区分基因和转基因的。基因不可能整合到人的身体里，人吃猪肉就会变成猪吗？
北青报：有观点认为转基因食品存在风险，因此同意生产转基因食品会不会操之过急？
陈君石：做什么事情都有风险，坐飞机没有风险吗？为什么人们还坐呢？零风险是不存在的，我们要控制在可以接受的范围内，转基因也一样。
我们不能承受的是舆论的风险、社会不安定的风险，政府目前对转基因的支持停滞不前的原因在于此。我们真正面临的风险，是已经贻误了转基因发展的时机。
北青报：为什么转基因争议这么大？
陈君石：食品安全大家都很关注，转基因项目投入资金不少，但科普这块儿不多，而且现在还被停止了，导致公众认识不足，出现现在这个局面。
这本来是一个科学问题，但现在不是一个科学问题了。在这个问题上，科学家被打败了。
