下午15时49分，绵阳消防支队特勤中队接到119指挥中心调度称，绵阳市高新区磨家收费站入口处有一辆载有33吨煤炭的挂车起火。接到命令后，特勤中队立即出动1辆泡沫水罐车、2辆水罐消防车、官兵18人驰援事故现场。16时03分，特勤中队官兵赶到现场，此时火势正处在猛烈燃烧阶段，挂车尾部已全部陷入火海，并且大火还不断从挂车尾部向头部蔓延，事故导致收费站前后路段交通严重堵塞，现场交警已对现场展开警戒。
由于起火挂车上载有33吨煤炭，如不及时控制后果不堪设想。现场指挥员立即部署扑救：决定采取三面夹击的战术，快速地控制火势，防止煤炭全部引燃，造成更为严重后果。战术明确后，各号员按照分工立即展开战斗：一号车单干线出两只水枪对挂车左右两面的火势进行控制；二号车单杆线出一只水枪对挂车尾部的火势进行控制；三号车人员就近寻找水源给一二号车供水，保证前方供水不间断。16时15分，明火被完全打灭。16时26分，消防官兵对挂车存在的阴燃火势清理完毕。随后，消防官兵又对挂车进行了降温完毕，直至确认无复燃可能后方才撤离现场。
据驾驶员师傅回忆，当时挂车行驶至磨家收费站处时，从反光镜中看到货车尾部在冒烟，便立即靠边停车检查，当发现时轮胎周围起火后立即利用干粉灭火器进行了自救，但由于火势越烧越猛，这才报警，幸亏消防官兵及时赶到，才保存了至少20多吨的煤炭未被燃烧。
