据北京师范大学的专家介绍，自2013年5月开始，北京师范大学生物多样性研究团队与省森工总局下辖的绥阳林业局老爷岭东北虎自然保护区合作开展东北虎和东北豹全面科学系统调查。这次调查项目旨在评估老爷岭东北虎自然保护区东北虎、东北豹种群的全面信息、虎豹猎物和生物多样性基础信息，为制定黑龙江省虎豹保护计划提供基础科学数据。通过8个月的野外艰苦调查和数据分析，已初步掌握该区域东北虎和东北豹种群数量和活动情况。调查结果同时也表明，经过多年实施天然林保护工程，该区域植被得到极大恢复，生态环境得到较大改善，野生动物种群数量呈现恢复性增长，东北虎、东北豹等生态链顶级捕食者出现频率逐渐增多，老爷岭东北虎自然保护区已经成为中国东北虎、东北豹现有重要分布区和未来中国虎豹种群的重要恢复区。
资料显示，东北虎和东北豹是东北针阔混交林生态系统的代表性和旗舰型物种，同时也是世界性的珍稀濒危保护物种，东北虎全球数量估计不超过500只，远东豹更加珍稀，目前的科学数据表明全球数量不超过50只。然而，对于中国野生东北虎、东北豹种群数量和分布现状一直缺乏全面系统的科学调查，尤其黑龙江省境内，目前还缺乏科学准确的虎豹种群和分布的科学数据、以及对未来恢复前景的有效评估。黑龙江省森工总局局长魏殿生表示，黑龙江省森工总局下一步将扩大与北京师范大学合作的范围，全面开展黑龙江省境内生物多样性以及东北虎、东北豹种群和未来恢复的科研监测及保护工作。(完)
