北斗卫星导航系统与美国的全球定位系统都是建设规模庞大的卫星定位体系，但是北斗导航系统有些不同，不仅可以用于卫星定位，还可以提供电信服务，这意味着除了给用户提供位置和时间的准确信息外，北斗系统还可以把这些信息发送给其他平台，并通过短信的形式与用户进行沟通，用途比美国的全球定位系统要广泛。
