这名来自江苏的86岁游客12月17日入境台湾，19日出现食欲不振，23日出现胸闷，24日急诊就医时因肺炎使用呼吸机，并入住加护病房至今。台湾疾病管制署副署长周志浩表示，老人在台湾旅游期间曾赴桃园县、台北市、新北市、台中市、嘉义市、高雄市、台东县、花莲县等景点、餐厅与饭店；经调查，可能曾与病患接触的人数有499人，其中6人曾出现上呼吸道症状，3人症状已缓解，因为感染风险极低，指挥中心将持续观察，不需要采检送验。
经医师评估，有需要者已给予预防性投药，并自主健康管理14天，其中3名有上呼吸道症状的医护人员除采检送验外，已安排暂时在家休息。个案发病时没有发烧、咳嗽，仅有食欲不振、胸闷等非典型症状，且检验呈现H7N9弱阳性，病毒量低，指挥中心分析透过飞沫传染的可能性不高。台大医院儿童感染科主任黄立民说，H7N9人传人的机率不高，老人的两位女儿是最可能的感染对象，也没有出现症状，推测病毒传播给其他人的机会不大。他提醒，需要特别注意的反而是有发烧、咳嗽以外非典型症状的接触者，但因症状不明显，监测困难。据悉，与这名游客同一旅游团的25人中，有22人已在12月24日返回大陆。只有患者的2名女儿留在台湾照顾父亲。
