从国家林业局了解到，今天下午在活动现场，待销毁的象牙将被集中整齐摆放在固定区域。15时30分就开始正式销毁了。届时，工作人员将小型象牙原料和制品直接投入机器里粉碎；对于大根象牙，会先用电锯截成几段，然后再送进粉碎机。由于销毁的象牙数量较多，同时也为了确保将每一个象牙销毁得“一干二净”，2台粉碎机很可能马不停蹄地工作数个小时，才能将这些象牙全部彻底粉碎。另外记者也了解到，对于这次销毁后的象牙碎末，其中一部分将用于警示展览和公共博物展馆的公众教育，剩余部分将集中保存。
一直以来，象牙被追捧为投资工具，被视为‘白色金子’，因而价格也一路飞涨。” 据业内人士介绍，1990年以前，1公斤的象牙市价不超过1000元，现在黑市1公斤已炒到了两三万元。近20多年来，象牙的价格涨了二三十倍。

每一根非法走私的象牙的背后都带着血腥的杀戮，而让人类如此残忍的动因逃不过两个字“利益”。国际爱护动物基金会曾通过调查发现，以象牙为标的物的非法交易链条在国际上已经形成，包括消费、盗猎、走私、市场四个环节。为了彻底摧毁非法贸易链条，保护大象，世界许多国家都在积极做出努力，国际爱护动物基金会亚洲总代理葛芮女士认为，我国的此次销毁行动，将给全世界发出信息，中国不需要象牙。
葛芮：很多的人使用象牙，是不知道这个象牙是大象被猎杀了以后才得到的，销毁掉象牙给全世界的发出的一个信息，是让非洲的盗猎者让他们知道，中国人不需要象牙，对走私者也是跟他们发出一个信息，中国不允许非法象牙的走私进入中国，那么对消费者意义更是非常的深远，让消费者在消费的过程中，要做出明智、道德的选择。
北京师范大学生命科学学院副教授张立，从事中国亚洲象研究和保护工作，此前一直呼吁使用销毁方式处理查获象牙。他认为这次的销毁，这一方面可以表明中国政府坚决打击非法象牙走私，保护濒危大象物种的态度；另一方面可以确保这些非法库存不会再流入市场刺激消费。
张立：这次销毁库存的行动，他的最主要的意义是向全世界各个国家来表示中国对打击非法走私象牙制品保护大象的一个信号，这个信号实际上我觉得是一个意义是很大的，目前，从过去的两年来看，非洲象处在一个很长严峻的一个情况之下，在濒危野生动植物总国际贸易公约监控的30多个非洲象原产国，这些数据表明，在2011年和2012年非洲象在野外被盗猎的数字已经高于了非洲象自然种群平均增长的速率，也就是说非洲象每年大约2%的速度的种群在减少。
这背后的主要原因， 就是由于非法象牙贸易的利益驱动，导致的盗猎猖獗，所以我们国家，这次也是既菲律宾，美国之后，又一个销毁大量非法象牙罚没的库存，这实际是表示中国政府对打击象牙走私的决心。
