在知识的海洋面前，我是永不毕业的小学生

在知识的海洋面前，我宁愿是一个学不完、毕不了业的小学生。对此，我感到最幸福，也最快乐，对自己也永远不满足。
我是一个山东的乡下孩子，长成一个山东的乡下老头。经过这么多年，基本体会就是快乐是一种力量：上学一定要快快乐乐地学习，当老师一定要快快乐乐地教学生，然后给国家、给人类进步事业快快乐乐地服务，这样才能干得好。
解放前，我们县连一所中学都没有；我们乡有七八个村，连一所小学都没有。1949年秋天之后，我们乡才有了第一所小学。我是8周岁才上小学，因为上学晚，就更加珍惜学习机会，因为学习特别快乐。
1952年下半年我们县有了历史上第一所中学。我考上初中了，能不高兴吗？我快乐。那是一个乡下孩子第一次离家住校，所以我上课特别好好听，特别盼着考试，因为考试完了以后就可以回家玩了，看我妈妈、奶奶和姥姥了。我快乐。
我有一个缺点或者是优点，就是喜欢玩儿。篮球、足球、乒乓球都喜欢，所以上课我好好听，下了课快点做作业，省点时间去玩。快乐是个动力。
现在都说美丽的梦想，我11岁时，第一次在乡下见到汽车，所以有了梦想——就是要开汽车，当司机。这个梦想一直到进了外交部之后，到了非洲才实现。
我快乐，因为我碰到了好老师。一个人一辈子都要受教育，中国人有一句俗话叫活到老学到老，我觉得很对，但又不够。就是活到老学到老，也学不完，我是越活越觉得自己无知，越觉得自己有好多东西没有学。所以受教育真是快乐的源泉。
孔子说，三人行必有我师。我不太懂：为什么两人行就没有我师呢？所以我的看法和体会是，两人行，除了我之外，那个人就是我的老师。
不管年纪大的还是比我小的，不管是中国人还是外国人，我都有向他们学习的地方。所以我快乐的另外一个源泉就是我在全世界都有老师。从历史的角度看，从古代到现代，我也都有老师。
在我49年的外交生涯中，我一共到过全世界183个国家。需要特别说明的是，我最尊敬的人、最佩服的人、永远感激不尽的人就是我的老师，各国的老师。
我曾经有3次出国留学的机会，但因为历史原因都没有留成。第一次是在1958年年底，乡下学校校长告诉我，再过一年准备派你去苏联留学，你现在要突击俄语，因为你没学过。但是到了第二年，1959年上半年，校长通知我：中苏关系出现了问题，留学你别去了，你自己考吧，后来就没有留苏。若干年之后我才到了当年要去的莫斯科大学，在那里流连忘返，也请教了莫斯科大学老师和学生一些问题。
又过了若干年，我在北大上一年级的时候，学校通知我，让我准备去英国留学，很可能是牛津或者剑桥，公派。结果过了3个月通知我说，不去了。因为中国在1960年遇到了严重的经济困难和自然灾害，所以公派留学计划取消了。
再过了若干年，我已经到了外交部，通知我可以到美国去留学，或者叫镀镀金，一年。没过两个星期又通知我不去了，因为想让我做外交部的新闻发言人。
我非常羡慕有机会到国外学习的中国青年朋友，但是我有我的幸福所在，就是除了有那么多优秀中国老师之外，好多外国老师对我太好了，对我的教育太值得珍惜了。
比如说我有位英国老师，做人特别好。他专门支援中国人民的抗日战争，抗战胜利之后留了下来，教育赶走侵略者之后的中国青年，新中国成立之后又帮助新中国培养人才。我成了他的学生之一。
他讲课特别厉害。教英文时，他说学英文不光要学发音、词汇、语法，还要学习有关的历史背景，这样才能学得透。即使教我们最简单的英文单词，他都联系历史来讲，比如说猪肉，学过英文的人都知道pork(猪肉)，他就问了为什么和猪没关系呢？是因为欧洲大陆去的人占领英伦三岛，把当地人当作奴隶，养猪的人只能是当地人，猪的名字就是pig，但是一旦成了肉，对不起，当地人不能吃，只能给欧洲大陆来的人吃。所以猪肉的英文就用欧洲大陆的一种语言来命名了。他这样一讲我觉得就更愿意快乐地学习了。
我还有一位美国老师，她特别热爱新中国，嫁给中国留学生，后来成了我的英文老师。当时北大条件很差，7个男生住一间宿舍。这位端庄的美国女老师，骑自行车一个晚上到男生宿舍给我们辅导，自己带着镜子让我们对着口型练发音；另一个晚上她会到女生宿舍去辅导。
我特别喜欢印度的泰戈尔。作为第一位获得诺贝尔文学奖的亚洲人，他还是世界唯一的两个国家国歌的作词者和作曲者，我想不到还有第二个这样的人。我专门去过他的家乡学习他的事迹，他还是一个伟大的国际政治观察家。1937年日本军国主义发动全面侵华战争之后，他第一个愤怒谴责这种帝国主义行径。这就是我没有见过面的好老师。
我特别崇拜美国第三任总统托马斯·杰斐逊，他一直说在美国当总统很光荣，但是他认为最幸福的职业是当老师，当大学校长，为此，我专门到弗吉尼亚大学向他表示敬意，他那么喜欢做老师，值得我尊重。
还有一个我没见过的，就是小说家马克·吐温，我太喜欢他了。那么好的创作能力、创新能力，同时还是那么好的一个人。在那个时候他就为在美国打工的华人主持公道，仗义执言，他批评当时美国少数官员歧视中国的工人。说实在的，这种先进理念让我敬佩，直到他死后100年，美国国会才通过决议，向当时受歧视的中国人道歉。
今天参加这个会我感到特别幸福的是，这个会可以产生更多的国际交流，特别在教育领域，为我们自己的祖国，也为世界各国人民培养出好的人才，这些人才能使我们中国人民和世界各国人民，今后都能生活得更幸福，更快乐。也像我所喜爱的，一位美国诗人在诗中写的，让我们共同发展好教育事业，搞好教育交流，让我们这个世界的每一个明天都比今天更美好。
