事故发生后，内江市委、市政府主要领导作出重要指示，要求全力开展救援工作，确保生命安全。四川省安监局副局长黄锦生、副局长苏国超一行，内江市政府副市长王明华、田文平等领导赶赴现场指挥抢险救援工作。威远县委、县政府主要领导及相关领导、部门人员第一时间赶到现场，成立“1·05”瓦斯燃烧事故处置领导小组，全力抢救受伤人员，做好善后工作。事故原因正在进一步调查中。
威远县委宣传部副部长陈丽告诉成都商报记者，岩洞湾矸子厂为威远县属的非煤系矿山民营企业，开采的是煤矸石而非煤炭。当班下井人员共30人，但在事故点附近排险作业面的只有8人。成都商报记者从威远“1·05瓦斯燃烧事故”处置领导小组了解到，岩洞湾矸子厂属于瓦斯矿井，核定产能为6万吨/年，事发时四证齐全。该企业自9月18日起对15条隐患进行整改。
8小时紧张救援 救出4人
15：20 内江市矿山救护队46名救援人员分三组下井对事故点附近巷道进行搜救。
16：30 救出18名被困矿工。
17：30 内江市矿山救护队和眉山市矿山救护队近50名救援人员在井下搜救被困的3名矿工。
19：14 救援人员在距离井口约一公里的井下发现3名被困矿工，初步检查均已死亡。
19：20 矿山救护队员全部撤离，搜救工作基本结束。
20：17 事故初步定性为局部瓦斯燃烧事故。除4人死亡、3人轻伤、1人重伤外，还有26人因吸入过量一氧化碳被送院治疗。
放炮工人：刚一引爆 瓦斯把我头发都点燃了
昨日下午5时许，成都商报记者赶到威远县人民医院，见到被烧伤的雷吉昌。雷吉昌55岁，脸部、手脚被烧伤，额头上满是水泡。雷吉昌告诉记者，昨天早上7时许，他下到距离地面800余米的第四采区第二支巷实施爆破工作。该点位距离巷口有100余米。按照技术要求，雷吉昌安放了4个炮。当天上午接近11时，爆破工作就绪，雷吉昌走到距离巷口20来米远的位置，“刚一引爆，瓦斯就燃了，把我头发都点燃了”。雷吉昌说，可能是“空气短路”，放炮时引燃了瓦斯。雷吉昌称，他在倒地的同时还感觉到脸部一阵剧烈的灼痛感。为了保命，他用手打熄头上的火，然后紧贴着地面爬出巷口，最后通过风炉逃生。
另一伤者苏丙贵则称，事发时，他正在距离第二支巷约200米的位置。一声巨响后，苏丙贵感到一股冲击力从背后把他推了一下，回头一看，只见一阵红光。苏丙贵发觉事情不妙，赶紧卧倒。此时，瓦斯燃烧冲出的热浪从他背上冲了过去，整个巷子里顿时乌烟瘴气。苏丙贵瘫倒在地，不敢起来。
