这场火灾的烈度，据众多目击者描述，前所未有。“当时，我们就在厂房下面，还接住了一个孩子呢！”人群中，有人回忆道。

在大东鞋厂上班的小张，是贵州人，她和老公都在温岭打工，一家三口就住在鞋厂的宿舍里。
小张回忆，前天下午，她正在三楼车间和工友们一起专心干活，儿子在厂房一楼前的空地上玩耍。两点半过后，张某忽然发现周围暗了下来，正想问发生什么事的时候，楼下有人大声喊着“着火了，着火了”。

前天下午2点左右，在大东鞋厂对面开小卖部的林某，关上了店门，上楼看电视去了。大概过了半个多小时，林某接到母亲的电话，说家附近好像有厂房烧起来了，让他出去看看究竟怎么回事。
林某跑下楼一看，起火的正是对面的大东鞋厂，此时已是浓烟滚滚。
阿贵是大东鞋业隔壁工厂的员工，事发时他正在自家工厂里干活，忽然听到隔壁工厂里人声鼎沸，跑出来一看，才发现着火了。
“不到两分钟，一楼厂房的火苗就往外面蹿了，而且越来越凶猛。”阿贵说。
“当时，有一些从厂房里逃出来的工人，还有附近前来帮忙的群众，都想冲进火灾现场去救人。可是，我看了看火势，估摸着要是有人进去了，根本就没机会出来了。”阿贵说，“当时我就联合了几个人，一边拦住那些想冲进火场的人，一边让人报警。”
小卖部老板林某告诉记者，印象中，鞋厂三楼的车间是贴帮面的，二楼主要是小料加工，一楼是做扎帮这道工序，还有不少成品也堆放在一楼。工厂里的楼梯并不宽，估计宽度在1米8左右。有时候，货物堆不下了，也会堆放在楼道上。
对于前天的这场悲剧，林某表示，村子里有许多鞋厂，对于消防知识和消防器械使用的培训很不重视。

昨天，微博“温岭发布”还发出一张照片，是消防官兵和民众用梯子救人的场景，其中一名黑衣男子弯着腰，把梯子顶在肩膀上。
原来，当时由于条件限制，云梯车无法顺利进入现场，消防人员与附近救援民众只好在厂房外搭梯救人。但厂房有三层高，梯子根本够不着。为了固定腾空架起的梯子，一个黑衣男子用自己的肩膀顶住了梯子的底部，重压下，男子身体不停地弯曲，但他始终没有放下肩上的梯子。
