但在亲友的描述中，吴波其实是赌场的老板之一，且案发前赢了100多万。“春风得意”的赌徒吴波，为何炸掉了自己的赌场，制造这起23人死伤的惨案？案件真相，仍是一个谜。

赌场都设在山坡上，周围没有人烟
从凯里市区出发，北行20多公里，就到了龙场镇。与繁华的闹市区不同，虽已接近年关，龙场镇的街面依然萧条，大部分店面关着，也没有多少行人。
再往北行驶数公里，从一条岔道往山区走，就进入了老山村。这里是贫困闭塞的苗族村，去年上半年，因村里的希望小学变身垃圾站而广受媒体关注。
1月13日下午，老山村再次成为媒体焦点——赌场爆炸，15人死亡，8人受伤。案发后，警方设了几道关卡日夜守着，外人难以进入爆炸现场。
王城因为接送过吴波的原因，他知道山里还藏着另外几个赌场。
1月15日下午，王城带着记者来到龙场镇知青洗煤厂，这里距离爆炸现场不过2公里左右。从洗煤厂边上的一条小路往山上走几百米远后，就是几丘平整的山田。往高处一望，杂草丛中散乱的白色垃圾格外打眼，那里就是曾经的赌场。
在一处荒坡上，用刚砍下来的几根树桩，搭建了一个简易棚，盖上防雨布和塑料薄膜，就成了赌场。
赌具“滚地龙”已经码放整齐，可能时间仓促，赌场老板还来不及运走就出事了。“滚地龙”是近五年内在贵州省内盛行的一种赌博方式，赌具就是用粗糙的木块连起来，拼成一个长约20多米，宽不到2米的“桌面”，边上钉上20多厘米高的挡板。
开赌时，“桌面”就摆放在简易棚的地上，赌客站在“桌面”两侧，有三个用木头做的类似麻将里的骰子放在高处，每个骰子边长有20多厘米，用一根铁杆拦着，扯动绳子后，骰子沿着木板搭成的斜坡滚到“桌面”上，通过骰子点数的大小来决定输赢。
赌场里散落着高档烟盒、木炭盒，周围是成堆的一次性纸碗，显示出曾经的喧嚣。“光卖小吃的，一天就可以赚两千多。许多人（赌徒）在边上烧香拜佛，像疯了一样。”王城说。
老山村发生爆炸的赌场，与知青洗煤厂附近赌场的设施类似，都选在周边没有人烟的山坡上。

因为案件重大，在警方的压力之下，赌徒或是参与赌博的、赌场放风的，要么自首接受警方调查，要么已经外逃。对于爆炸发生时的情形，已经难以找到目击者。
案发后，近十辆车曾结队前往现场，但被警方拦了下来，他们都是死者家属。这些家属整理的7个死者名单中，有3个是台江县人，2个施秉县的，2个剑河县的。其中，年纪最小的才19岁。
赌徒案发前一天，嫌疑人还说“赚了百多万”
据警方通报，有重大作案嫌疑的是来自施秉县的吴波，35岁，曾经有过吸毒史。
在亲友的描述中，吴波有着不同的两面：一面是好赌的赌客，最多时曾一次输掉30多万；另一面又特别能吃苦，有头脑，“很会抓钱”。
吴波家在施秉县城的新开发区，这个曾经“一根烟就能走完全城”的小县城，现在也在扩张。吴家的房子，就建在一条新街道上。房子是几年前买下地皮后建起来的，共有五层，底下租出去开灯具店了，剩下的三层留作自用。吴波的母亲、妹妹及哥嫂一家三口住在这里。
吴波因为好赌，没有和家人住在一起，家里曾给他留过一块198平米的地皮，后来吴波赌输了，就把地皮卖了出去，大概卖了35万。
2004年左右，吴波又迷上了当地很盛行的“斗鸡”，“他在里面总是赌得最大的。”吴的朋友说。有媒体报道称，吴波“斗鸡”，最多一次输过10万。
好赌的吴波，却并不会打麻将，“他看都看不懂。”朋友说。生活中，吴波也不爱烟酒，但脾气暴躁，曾因打伤人被关过3个月。
吴波的母亲介绍，儿子不赌的时候，人挺好的，对自己也还孝顺。
吴波7岁时就丧父，初中二年级时就辍学了。他后来的经历比较复杂：搞过长途运输，但请来的司机开车撞进了别人家，生意以失败告终。在施秉县推广羊养殖业时，他又去搞了一块地来养羊，后来将地转给了县农业局。其间，他还炒过矿。
2012年，吴波有了100多亩的太子参基地，那年价钱好，一位朋友估计他可能赚了200多万。“太能吃苦了，就住在山上，我上去帮忙了一天，就病倒了。”吴波女友的大姐说。
2013年，吴波预计太子参的价钱会下跌，缩减了种植规模。7月份，吴波和人合伙，一起去到龙场镇开起了赌场。
吴波的母亲介绍，出事的“堂子”（即赌场），为头的是一个姓杨的人，一共有十多个人合伙，吴波是其中一个。吴波去开赌场，其朋友介绍，别人肯定是看中他好赌，认识的赌客多。
吴波似乎运气不错，在亲友的描述中，他赢了不少钱。“爆炸发生前一天的上午11点多钟，吴波给我打来电话，显得很高兴，说自己近来运气不错，赚了100多万，欠下的赌债基本都还完了。”朋友听了也替他高兴，还劝吴波趁手里有钱，去买辆车，“经常在外面跑，也显得有面子”。
吴波和这位朋友交往了20多年，关系很好。2008年“5·12”地震那天，两人还一起去贵阳买车。开了不到一个月，吴波手头紧，车降价一万八转给了朋友。
对于吴波赢钱的事情，其女友的家人也证实了这一点。女友的大姐介绍，出事前，吴波曾给了女友3000元“红钱”，让她请亲朋们吃饭，“还给了我孩子200块呢。”
对于突然以“爆炸嫌疑人”面目出现的吴波，其亲友都认为“不可能是他干的”。警方也一直没有通报爆炸案的进展，外人也就无从判断真相究竟如何。
同样无法证实的，还有吴波是否落网的消息。吴波母亲和女友均向记者证实，吴波在爆炸案的第二天就已经落网了。女友的妹妹告诉记者，1月14日上午10点多钟，都匀市公安局打来一个电话，是吴波转过来的消息，希望家人去聘请律师。这一消息目前也无法证实，警方并没有通报相关信息。
赌局赌徒们最终会输得精光
吴波参与开赌场的细节，其家人都称不了解。而从一些赌徒的描述中，开在山上的赌场，虽然简陋，但资金量惊人。
黔东南州天柱县的一位参股赌徒王鑫（化名）称，最多的时候，一天光抽水就可以上百万。在赌场，形形色色的人都有，就像一场野外的狂欢。“卖烟、卖水、卖小吃的都有”，赌徒也很复杂，都是外地来的，做生意的老板、街头的混混……男男女女，60多岁的老人、10多岁的孩子都有。
王鑫在天柱曾有过一个金矿，因赌博借了高利贷还不起，他在2010年正月初二选择了出逃，3年后的春节才敢回家。在他的记忆中，“滚地龙”最早在凯里出现，是在20多年前，就在街上赌，5毛钱或几块钱。
“滚地龙”赌具粗糙、简单，看起来不容易作弊，输赢纯粹靠运气，这吸引了大量赌徒参与。王鑫介绍说，其实也可以作弊，如在骰子里放磁铁或者遥控装置，“如果玩的人是高手，就不作弊，是新手就可以作弊。”
要在山坡上开一个赌场，并不是一件容易的事情。为了保证安全，出面组织的“堂主”需要有一定的社会地位，有经济实力，在赌场所在地有良好的社会关系，“白道”、“黑道”都有人脉，所在地的村、乡等系统也都要有人。
赌场地点的选择，首先要处理好山坡附近复杂的社会关系，其次就是交通。一般会选择在交通比较便利的地方，车能开到，但需要步行5分钟以上的路程。这样有了危险，赌徒们才有时间往山上逃跑。
开赌场也需要大量资金来投资，以吸引赌徒参与。如放风的、保证安全的马仔，每个人每天都要几百块钱。赌博散场时，对拉赌客的司机，也会给每人发放200块左右的油费，以鼓励多拉人来赌。对输得精光的赌徒，还会发放七八百块不等的路费，以吸引他们继续参赌。“非常人性化。”台盘乡一位赌徒说。

在赌场中，真正能赚到钱的，是提供安全保护的那些“社会关系”、靠抽水的赌场老板、边上的小生意人。赌徒们最终都会输得精光，落入在赌场里巡视的放高利贷者的手中。
放高利贷的是另外的一个圈子，基本不参与赌博，1万块钱，一天的利息是500。其追债方式简单，变卖家产还债，否则就派马仔去家里坐着、甚至会住下来。
“借了高利贷还不起的人，只有三条路可走：跑路、自杀或者杀人。”王鑫总结。
在凯里的这场爆炸中，究竟因何原因引发，目前警方还没有公布任何信息。爆炸后，凯里开始全面禁赌。一位酒店经理称，“客房里的麻将桌，警察要求搬走，否则就会罚款，这一次，不知道持续多久才会恢复。”
值得一提的是，有媒体报道称，在13日爆炸发生前的20天，凯里警方也曾严打地下赌博窝点，此前一年半内，连续严打至少三次。
