1951年第一次进图书馆 借《红军长征故事》

李肇星回忆，当时图书馆规定，每人每次只能借一本书。但他去一次实属不易，要走七八里路。为了解决这个问题，便想了一个巧妙的办法：先借一本，用一两个小时看完，再还再借。李肇星现在还记得，当时他看的第一本书是《红军长征故事》。
“我还记得要借的第二本书是《猎人日记》。管理员告诉我，这本书很难懂，又推荐了一本我能看懂的书。我很感动，从此以后图书馆成为我最爱去的地方。”李肇星慨言。
而北京大学图书馆则是对李肇星教育最大的地方。在李肇星眼中，北大图书馆给他上的第一课，是使他发现了自己的无知，也因此更加热爱学习。“在当时，我曾因能考上大学有些自命不凡，到了北大图书馆才发现那么多书没看过。北大的校风也好，老师和学生一样排队借书、查阅典籍。”李肇星说，当时有位老人跟在自己后面排队借书，后来旁边同学告知，这是当时全国知名的美学家朱光潜。李肇星赶忙请教授排到前面，朱光潜拒绝了。
“这更让我感到了自己的无知。当时在北大读书五年几乎没用过教科书，均为教授讲、学生听，我也养成了随身带着笔和纸的习惯。”李肇星慨言。
无论何时都应该敬畏祖国的优秀文化
在北大学习五年后，李肇星的命运和祖国连在了一起。当时校方通知他去英国留学，遗憾的是因为当时国家经济困难未能成行。没能出国的李肇星反而觉得很高兴，因为北大图书馆的书还没看完。李肇星称，当时他那种民族文化自豪感是由衷的、发自内心的。
但李肇星同时表示，单纯讲图书阅读率，中国是较为落后的。他说：“联合国教科文组织曾发表一篇图书阅读方面的报告，从全球几个主要国家的进行抽样调查。结果显示，最不爱看书的国家包括中国。我看了以后觉得心里很不是滋味，甚至希望统计结果不合理。”李肇星笑称。
“我现在对一些现象很不理解。比如有些人学外语是为了显示自己有文化。尤其在一些用词上，我们中国明明有这个词，却偏偏要用外文来替代，比如将晚会称作‘派对’。”李肇星表示，每个人无论何时都应该敬畏自己国家的优秀文化，热爱祖国。
“有时我去参加一些音乐会，唱着唱着中国歌儿，中间突然夹杂几句外语，这让我感觉很伤心：这是对自己文化不够尊重。”李肇星表示，小学五年级的班主任曾一再说，人的一生要不断学习，并在临别时送给他一本《可爱的中国》作纪念。这也影响了李肇星，在此后的生活中，他一直非常注重学习。
