共和国第六任国务院总理温家宝出身书香门第，家学渊源。温氏家族世居天津市郊北辰区宜兴埠镇的温家胡同8号。相传温家先祖6代人都居住在此。年长已久，胡同以温家姓氏命名。宜兴埠镇离天津市区约4公里路，到火车北站仅2.5公里。
温家宝自祖辈起两代献身教坛，是名副其实的教育世家，可谓桃李满津门。
温家宝的祖父温瀛士，字阆仙，生于1895年。温瀛士在年轻时非常有志气，充满了激情与理想，17岁即开始投身教育事业。身为教员的温瀛士每天上、下午各上4节课。傍晚下课后，匆匆吃罢晚饭又急急进城，到劝学所(教育局)主办的师范单级教学班进修。及至深夜下课，回到家中已是后半夜。进修期间，温瀛士风雨无阻，从未缺课。他后来在结业考试中一举拔得“头筹”，在众多考生中名列第一，方才真正取得了教书的资格。20世纪20年代，温瀛士在宜兴埠一所私立学校任校长。
温瀛士的弟弟温瀛阶，也就是温家宝的叔祖，后来则是天津一所公立学校的校长。而温家宝的父母也都是执教多年的老教师。父亲温刚是天津第三十三中学的地理老师，母亲杨秀兰是天津市区一所小学的语文教师。
更值得一提的是温家宝的另一位叔祖，亦即温瀛士的幼弟温朋久老先生。解放战争期间，他一度曾在由著名历史学家范文澜执掌的北方大学任教授。
现年98岁高龄的温朋久是新中国外交部宣告诞生后最早任命的15位正副司长、主任委员中的一位。他是外交圈内最具战略头脑的外交家、后来被誉为中国“基辛格”的宦乡先生(前外交部部长助理、政策研究室主任，前驻比利时、卢森堡大使兼欧共体使团团长)的第一副手，为外交部西欧非洲司的正、副司长。如今，草创时期的外交部15位司局级官员，健在的只有温朋久和当年的国际司副司长龚普生女士(后任首任驻爱尔兰大使，前外交部常务副部长章汉夫夫人)。不过，温朋久在部内工作时间并不长。1年后，他就去了美丽的日内瓦，成为新中国第一任驻日内瓦的总领事。今天，温朋久离百岁大寿仅有“一步之遥”，堪称外交部的第一老寿星。
生于1905年的温朋久原名温瀛举，字鹏久，盖因崇敬抗金英雄岳飞(字鹏举)之故，也兼含“鹏程九万里”之意。这个很有内涵的名字就出自大哥温瀛士之手。温朋久此生最难忘的就是兄长温瀛士。
温朋久6岁那年，父亲(即温家宝的曾祖父)病故。从此，长兄为父，他一直在大哥培养教育下成长。就是从那个时候开始，温瀛士毅然决然用稚嫩的肩膀担负起家庭重担。他就是用当小学教员寥寥8块大洋的月薪养活自己，同时又将弟弟们抚养成人。温瀛士对幼弟温朋久管教甚严。1913年，温朋久入宜兴埠民立第五小学就读。读初小时，温朋久只拿了第二，温瀛士就面露愠色，十分不快。直到温朋久高小考了第一，温瀛士方露喜色。后来天津县小学会考，少年温朋久名列榜首，含辛菇苦的温瀛士才开心地笑了。
天津解放前夕，温瀛士不幸被害。40多年后，每忆及沧桑往事，温朋久总怃然叹曰：“这是我一辈子最难受的事！”
少年时代的温朋久曾与周恩来、邓颖超等革命先驱参加天津反日爱国运动。1919年冬，14岁的温朋久考进了天津直隶省(1928年改称河北省)第一师范学校。比温朋久大1岁的邓颖超则是天津直隶省第一女子师范学校的学生。不过，那时邓颖超的名字还叫“邓文淑”。
1920年1月29日，天津各校学生五六千人集会，周恩来任总指挥，邓颖超当时被推举为天津女界爱国同志会演讲队队长。人小志高的温朋久手执小旗，走在队伍的前列。80余年悠悠往事弹指一挥间。温朋久怀念周恩来、邓颖超夫妇诗云：“生离死别俗间事，跟随周邓亦欣然。”可谓字字含情。
后来，当温家宝1942年在天津北郊呱呱落地之时，37岁的温朋久已是国民党第三十八军军长赵寿山(后任解放军第一野战军副司令员)办公室的代理主任了。风云际会，指点江山。未几，温朋久又随国民党第三集团军总司令赵寿山将军赴甘肃武威。
20世纪20年代末30年代初，温朋久先后入日本早稻田大学第一高等学院、德国洪堡大学(柏林大学)深造。抗战胜利后，温朋久和赵寿山等人结伴而行，自天津直奔晋冀鲁豫解放区。1949年11月8日晚间，中央人民政府最先任命的外交部长周恩来，在北京城东古老的外交部街33号(即新中国外交部旧址)郑重宣布：中华人民共和国外交部成立了。温朋久亲耳聆听了周恩来总理兼外交部长慷慨激昂、气壮山河的重要演说……
也许是偶然的巧合，20余年后的“文革”高潮中，在北京地质学院读书的温家宝被分配到武威以西500公里的酒泉，一干就是十多年，直到他1982年奉调入京。温朋久至今还清晰地记得，那是1968年2月的一个朔风怒吼的漆黑夜晚。那晚，温朋久、刘绛雯夫妇亲自送温家宝上了火车。没过几天，温朋久夫妇也在劫难逃，被康生之流投入了监狱。
温家宝的名字也是祖父温瀛士起的，但注入新解的却是温朋久。温朋久认为：“温家宝”就是“温加饱”，以此来告诫侄孙时时要把人民的温饱放在心上，居安思危，永不忘本，来自人民，又为人民服务。现在任重道远的温家宝，当然已不会满足于“温加饱”，“全面建设小康社会”的宏伟目标正有待共和国新任总理带领全国人民去实现！
温家宝自小在天津长大。1949年，温家宝随家人搬出了温家胡同8号，来到南开区西门里达摩庵胡同安下新家。
中国国际问题研究所所长宋明江先生(前外交部西欧司司长、驻比利时大使兼驻欧盟使团团长)就是少年时代温家宝嬉戏的玩伴。那时候，宋明江一家也住在西门里达摩庵胡同。温家宝的家就在宋家的对门，两家很熟稔。
后来，温家宝考入了全国重点中学——南开中学。如今，值得南开学子引以为豪的是，这里不仅出了4位全国人大常委会副委员长(林枫、吴阶平、邹家华、周光召)，5位全国政协副主席(屈武、王昆仑、孙孚凌、万国权、朱光亚)，1位副总理(邹家华)，还出了两位国务院总理：新中国的首任总理周恩来和第六任总理温家宝。
也许是当地理教员的职业习惯，温家宝的父亲温刚对地质学情有独钟。他搜集了很多地质书籍，其中就有著名地质学家李四光早年的许多著作。温刚曾多次对已考入南开中学的温家宝说过，中国地大物博，遍地都是宝藏，那些矿产资源需要青年人去勘探开采。也许父亲的教诲打动了儿子，1960年夏，南开中学毕业的温家宝果真下决心报考了新中国成立初期所建的北京地质学院(现为中国地质大学)，并被地质矿产一系——地质测量及找矿专业所录取，从此与地质矿产结缘达四分之一世纪。
在平林漠漠、黄沙漫漫的大西北，温家宝从甘肃地质局酒泉地质力学队的一名普通技术员，一直擢升到甘肃地质局副局长。在此期间，他有缘结识了毕业于兰州大学地理系的兰州姑娘张培莉。20世纪70年代初，两人同结百年之好。
当历史车轮进入20世纪80年代以后，改革开放的中国大地云蒸霞蔚，风起云涌。选拔干部的“四化”(革命化、年轻化、知识化、专业化)理念如春风般吹拂神州大地，气象万千，科教知识界大批精英人物纷纷脱颖而出，在中国政治舞台上崭露头角。与大多数雨后春笋般涌现的科教战线的青年俊才一样，1982年对年届不惑的温家宝而言，也是极其关键的重要一年。当时的地质矿产部部长孙大光为培养接班人，从各省征召部级干部人选。
都说伯乐慧眼识人，可孙大光这位“伯乐”有一条原则：尽量不在部机关找部级领导干部。每当要物色遴选时，他就到全国转一圈。
北京是“近水楼台”。孙大光先从北京地质局调入夏国治处长，出任地质矿产部科技局局长。而后，他从南昌调来江西地质局副局长、总工程师朱训，出任地质矿产部副部长；从兰州调来温家宝，出任地质矿产部政策法规室主任、党组成员。1年后，温家宝升任地质矿产部副部长。3年后，奉调出任中共中央办公厅副主任。嗣后近20年在温家宝身上发生的故事就是众所周知的了，余不累述。(宗道一)
