IDC发布的2013年第一季度中国区服务器市场调研报告显示，联想服务器以12.3%的市场份额继续领跑国产X86服务器市场，连续9个季度位居国内X86服务器市场份额榜首。
联想用“三步走”形容服务器业务的未来战略，即在2013年完成通用型、定制化服务器及存储产品的全球布局，在2014年实现X86服务器挺进全球前三，在2016年初步形成以联想为中心的生态系统。
分析人士认为，一次对外部业务的收购可以帮助联想集团在服务器市场与惠普和戴尔展开竞争，此外还将有助于联想在一段时间内拥有新的增长点与利润来源。
事实上，去年春季，联想也曾讨论收购IBM低端的x86服务器业务，但由于未能就该业务的价值达成一致，谈判未能成功。除联想之外，戴尔及富士通都考虑过收购IBM的服务器业务。
2005年，联想曾以12.5亿美元的价格收购了IBM的个人电脑业务——这在当时是中国公司进行的规模最大的一起收购，在未来的几年中，联想将其发展成为一项盈利能力巨大的业务。
