围绕钓鱼岛和竹岛(韩国称独岛)的宣传，日本外务省表示，虽然到目前为止各都道府县都曾致力于宣传，但是形成系统化、综合性宣传这还是首次。
2013年8月，日本外务省申请了10亿日元的预算用作岛屿争议的宣传费。日本外务省网站专门设有钓鱼钓相关的页面，通过11种语言详细介绍钓鱼岛信息。11种语言的钓鱼岛宣传视频在视频网站传播。
2013年11月22日，日本领土担当相山本一太就在记者会上透露，为向国际社会进一步宣传日方在领土问题上的主张和立场，日本政府将分设钓鱼岛及竹岛(韩国称独岛)官方宣传主页。
对此，中国外交部反复申明，钓鱼岛及其附属岛屿自古以来就是中国的固有领土，中方对此拥有充分的历史和法理依据。不管日方如何处心积虑宣传自己的错误立场，都无法改变钓鱼岛是中国固有领土这一基本事实。
日本在钓鱼岛问题上的错误立场和做法，实质是企图否认世界反法西斯战争胜利成果，否认和挑战战后国际秩序和《联合国宪章》的宗旨和原则。
韩国外交部也曾向日本政府表示强烈抗议，希望日本政府能清楚地认识到，这种歪曲历史的“挑衅”行为将成为阻碍韩日关系的重大绊脚石。同时，韩方希望日本政府能从过去的错误中认真吸取教训，采取负责任的行动。
