期间，连恩青也曾去往台州、杭州等地多家医院进行检查，但均未能得到解决。
据各方公开消息，2013年8月，连恩青在家人的陪同下去了上海市精神卫生中心，被诊断出有“持久的妄想症障碍”，治疗了2个月后出院，但不久惨案便发生。
2013年10月25日，连恩青来到温岭市第一人民医院耳鼻咽喉科门诊，寻找之前的主治医生。但主治医生不在，他就用匕首捅伤耳鼻咽喉科主任医师王云杰等3名医生。王云杰因受伤过重抢救无效离世。
连恩青的辩护律师朱圣勇在庭上提出，连恩青的犯罪动机和医院的医疗行为有因果关系，同时也给跟其精神疾病有因果关系。“连恩青的就医过程反反复复，他认为自己在手术后出现了多种并发症。医院在接到他投诉后，未有足够重视，也有敷衍的嫌疑。”
朱圣勇说，连恩青在跟医院反复沟通后，医院认为手术没有问题，连产生了医院处置不公的自我意识。在上海等地医院复诊后，结果还是没有问题，连甚至认为CT作假，各种医院都串通了。
朱圣勇说，连恩青缺积累了对医院的怨恨情绪，累加到他不惜以夺取他人生命把自己送上刑台的方式去达到自己的目的。
庭上，检察机关出具了一份由浙江省立同德医院司法鉴定所出具的鉴定书。该鉴定书显示，连恩青患有名为“疑病症”的一种精神疾病，但在案发当时是有刑事责任能力的。
而连恩青本人则在庭上多次否认自己有精神疾病，情绪极为激动，以至于法官不得不数次停下提醒其要注意控制情绪。
尽管连恩青本人没有否认鉴定书中所指他有刑事责任能力一事，但作为辩护律师，朱圣勇还是提出，由省立同德提供的鉴定报告可能与被告人的病情实际不符，不能准确判断连本人到底有没有刑事责任能力，应当再做二次鉴定。
连恩青的妹妹连超说，连恩青确实有精神病史，但从上海出院后没有按时按量吃药，案发当时精神状况并不好。她认为今天连恩青庭上自辩没有精神疾病等并不有利于最终的判决，连甚至不让家里请律师，家人都很伤心。
