据报道，联想斥资23亿美元获得IBM利润率越来越低的低端服务器业务，交易合同中也包括部分网络设备，比如交换机，以及服务器之间通信的部分技术。
不过，有另外一个网络业务并未包括在联想交易合同中，那就是术语所称的“软件定义的网络”（Software-Defined-Network），这是一种比较领先的网络技术，可以在数据中心的服务器之间，使用软件技术（而非网络设备）快速构建网络，这种网络更加灵活，免去了硬件操作麻烦。
IBM这一业务估值为10亿美元，消息人士称，IBM已经接触了行业内几个可能的买家，其中包括戴尔、惠普、思科、富士通、Juniper等。
一位知情人士称，IBM目前决定做大Watson超级计算机项目，以及云计算业务，因此上述软件性网络部门，不再被视为重要战略资产。
目前还不清楚外部公司对于IBM这一资产的兴趣，一家潜在收购方的高管对媒体表示，他们至少会对这一业务做下了解，已决定是否收购。
