与阳历年固定在365天或366天不同的是，农历是按照月亮圆缺变化周期即朔望月(约29.5天)来安排，1年12个月，比阳历年少11天左右。
为了协调阳历与农历之间的天数，古人采用了“19年7闰”的方法，即在19个农历年中加上7个闰年。农历闰年因为多了个闰月，因此一年有383天—385天左右，而农历平年一般有353天—355天。
“农历甲午马年因为闰了个九月，故有384天。有人认为马年是383天或385天，可能是因为前者在计算的时候忘记了1月31日这一天，后者可能是将阳历2月误认为29天。”史志成强调说，正月初一是农历生肖年的开始，在2014年1月31日－2015年2月18日之间出生的小孩都属马。
