中西部地区的咸阳、成都、西安、泸州、渭南等9个城市空气质量为严重污染，宜昌、宜宾、长沙、开封、洛阳等20个城市为重度污染，武汉、绵阳、岳阳、延安、石嘴山等15个城市为轻度至中度污染，拉萨、昆明、玉溪、克拉玛依、嘉峪关等7个城市为良。其中，咸阳为区域内污染最重城市，PM2.5和PM10日均值分别为343微克/立方米和469微克/立方米，AQI值达到393。
有关负责人指出，除夕夜间烟花爆竹集中燃放是影响空气质量的重要因素，开展空气质量新标准监测的161个城市中，1月31日凌晨1:00～3:00时PM2.5小时浓度明显升高。31日1:00时， 161个城市中有128个城市PM2.5小时平均浓度大于150微克/立方米(PM2.5日均标准值为75微克/立方米)，为重度及以上污染。其中，桂林、咸阳、株洲、衢州、西安等80个城市PM2.5小时平均浓度大于250微克/立方米，为严重污染。北京市PM2.5小时平均浓度为324微克/立方米，空气质量为严重污染。
31日10:00时，161个城市中有109个城市PM2.5小时平均浓度大于150微克/立方米(PM2.5日均标准值为75微克/立方米)，为重度及以上污染。其中，渭南、宝鸡、咸阳、西安、金华等48个城市PM2.5小时平均浓度大于250微克/立方米，为严重污染。北京市PM2.5小时平均浓度为108微克/立方米，空气质量为轻度污染。
有关负责人表示，2月1日，大气扩散条件较差，北京、天津和河北北部以中至重度污染为主，河北中南部主要城市均可能出现严重污染。2日，新一轮冷空气开始南下，大气扩散条件逐步好转，北京和河北北部以优良为主，天津为良至轻度污染，河北中南部以中度污染为主。
