因害怕暴露，张兴艳于当日先后将3名小孩杀害，分别抛尸于临湘市忠防镇、白云镇公路旁。10月31日23时许，张某某用准备好的手机卡，声称3个小孩在自己手中，以此为由向张小文、刘梅梅的爷爷张伟勒索90万元。11月1日15时许，张兴艳在岳阳市岳阳楼区某茶楼内被公安机关抓获。
法院经审理认为，被告人张兴艳为达到泄愤和勒索钱财的目的，绑架并杀害3名儿童，之后向被害人亲属勒索巨额钱财，其行为已构成绑架罪。被告人张兴艳因邻里纠纷，为泄愤和勒索财物，绑架并杀害3名无辜儿童，犯罪手段十分残忍，后果特别恶劣，罪行极其严重，依法判处死刑，剥夺政治权利终身，并处没收个人全部财产。
