俄媒称，北方工业公司虽然不是中国唯一的，却是为数不多的专业从事主战坦克研制的公司。MBT-3000新型坦克战斗全重51吨，最大时速应当达到42英里，即75公里/小时，行程500公里，能够借助专用设备跨越4-5米深的水障以及2.7米宽的壕沟。
新型战车配备125毫米滑膛炮，除了炮弹之外，还能发射最大射程5000米的炮射导弹。还配备12.7毫米高射机枪和7.62毫米同轴机枪。另外还有8具76毫米烟幕弹发射器和4具76毫米发烟弹发射器。该坦克装备第二代热成像仪，还配备新型消防系统。
MBT-3000主战坦克动力装置使用涡轮增压电传柴油发动机，功率1300马力，功率因素为25.5马力/吨。火控系统实现了全数字化，拥有GPS卫星导航系统。
评论家认为，MBT-3000新型坦克是MBT-2000改的进一步发展型号，没有特别突出的区别，主要创新成果是完善火控系统，加装GPS卫星导航系统。
