在形容一个显示屏幕时,我们会说它有多少像素,也就是通常所说的分辨率的本质意义,比如1080P的分辨率,就拥有1920×1080个像素,像素的数量越多,画面经越精细,很多人都了解这个道理,不过很多朋友都不知道,一个独立的像素,其实是由三个次像素来构成的,也就是红色、绿色以及蓝色三种次像素,其配合形成了我们见到的多彩画面,不过RGB的次像素排列只是最常见的形式,实际上对于次像素的研究,远不止于此。

最有代表性的就是Pentile排列,消费者从这种排列开始认识到次像素排列的学问,这种排列是美国的Clairvoyant公司研制并申请专利的次像素排列技术,三星于2008元与该公司签订协议,最终将这种排列的方式用到了著名的AMOLED屏幕中,通过Galaxsy手机,来到了全世界消费者的面前,其实Clairvoyant公司的Pentile还有一种解决方案,也就是这次我们重点叙述的RGBW排列。

不同的次像素排列方式

如果说Pentile排列的一种方案有效的解决了AMOLED屏幕的寿命问题,那么RGBW排列则是可以提升画面的细腻表现,其不是通过改动驱动来提升画面的像素,而是改变次像素的排列方式,从而达到同样的目的,这样的做法有很多优点,也有一定的缺陷,之后我们都会详细的谈到。

谈到具体的技术细节之前,我们也会有疑问,这种排列并非是新的研究成果,最近却和4K联系了起来,为什么韩系企业会在这个时候提起这种排列技术呢?带着这些疑问,我们一起走进次像素的世界吧,看看RGBW排列的魅力。

对抗台系新排列可减低成本

近期分辨率突飞猛进,1080P的设备已经呈现落伍的状态,手机上2K屏幕,电视上4K屏幕,这之后的功臣是驱动技术的发展,原本的非晶硅TFT驱动无法支持过高的像素,如今则是在LTPS以及IGZO驱动的支持下,同样尺寸的屏幕可以具有更多的像素,当然这些像素都是具有完整的三个次像素排列的,其可以实现4K水平的画面表现,精细的效果成为消费者升级设备的主要原因。

如果注意观察,我们就会发现LTPS驱动技术主要有日本、台湾以及韩国把持,IGZO面板则是主要来源于日本夏普,台湾以及日本都是高分辨率的受益者,单从电视行业来看,日系电视近年来的发展势头并不好,成本居高不下使得日本企业难以在价格方面和韩系以及内地的厂商(面板很多来自台湾)竞争,导致日系显示企业都是出现高额亏损。

不过在高分辨率的需求出现后,日系显示企业积极的拓展高分辨率的市场,尤其是小屏幕的市场,提供手机以及平板所需要的面板,快速的提高了利润率,台系的面板企业也是抓紧研发,4K的面板开始打入到内地的市场,而韩系企业则是将很大的精力放在了OLED面板的研究上,一时间没有跟上高分辨率的大潮,虽然韩系企业也能提供了高分辨率的面板,但却只能自产自销了。

因此在看到RGBW排列可以降低成本,同时提升画面分辨率的情况下,韩系的企业自然不会放过这个扳回一城的机会。

优势明显白色次像素是关键

那么RGBW排列为什么可以提升像素的数量,这样做的优势又是什么呢?

传统的像素由R(红色)、G(绿色)和B(蓝色)构成。FHD面板的像素为1920×1080,而每种像素由三种子像素组成(R,?G,?B),因此它一共有620万种颜色。而4K面板的分辨率有3840×2160,这表示它具有2490万种颜色(3840×2160种像素,每种像素由三种子像素构成)。因此UHD(4K)的分辨率是FHD(2K×1K)的四倍。

不同的RGBW像素排列方式

在韩系的RGBW面板中,一种方案是每种画素由两种子画素构成(RG或BW)。因此这种面板的分辨率有1920×RGBW×2160的水平,也就说次像素的体积小了,竖向的排列上,次像素的数量也就更多了。还有一种RGBW排列的方式,两个像素拥有5个次像素,这样在同样尺寸的面板上,横向的像素数量为原来的1.5倍,竖向排列上则为原来的2倍,加上拥有四种次像素,次像素的数量就可以和真正的4K面板媲美,这种方案称为G+UHD面板。

因此次像素的根本变化有两点,第一就是加入了白色的次像素,第二则是原本的R(红色)、G(绿色)和B(蓝色)次像素体积变小了,数量也增多了,这样做的优势有几个:

第一就是白色像素的加入,使得画面的亮度更高,这样就不需要像原本的4K产品一样,增加LED背光的数量,因为按照原本的排列方式,像素多了,画面的透光率也低了,只有增加背光的亮度才能维持原本的亮度,从而造成产品的成本提高,并且外观设计也比较的厚重。

第二则是驱动的简化,降低了成本,RGBW面板降低了驱动IC和时序控制器的成本。在传统的UHD面板中,由于子画素较多,因此需要足够强大的驱动IC和时序控制器来推动面板运作。但RGBW面板的子画素较少,因此驱动IC和时序控制器的成本可以得到降低。

细节取舍还看消费者的态度

当然有优势就有劣势,RGBW面板虽然在次像素的数量上可以媲美真正的RGB排列4K面板,但是由于有白色像素的影响,画面色彩的纯度会受到一定的影响,也就是我们通常所说的红色不够红,蓝色不够蓝的情况,这样的面板对于专业用户来说,是一个需要考虑的变化因素。

第二就是虽然次像素的数量增加了,但是次像素所构成的独立像素数量却仍旧不能和真正的4K面板相比,因此在画面的细腻程度上,也是会有一定的瑕疵,这也是目前看来,RGBW面板的最大劣势,但是这种劣势用肉眼观察是否真的明显,还是值得商榷的。

我们都知道目前虽然4K设备发展的速度很快,但是周边产品却并没有跟上,无论是片源还是播放设备,都没有太好的支持,这让4K显示器产品空有一身的优势,却发挥不出来,播放着1080P的画面,再强大的分辨率饿体现不出来,RGBW在同样的尺寸上,的确和传统的4K面板有差距,但是依旧比传统1080P要清晰。

对于电视这样的大尺寸远距离观看的产品,RGBW的分辨率提升,也是非常的明显的,虽然不是真真正正的4K,但是如果价格合适,消费者未必就不会买账,毕竟对技术深入研究的用户并不多,价格OK,显示效果OK就可以了。

韩系策略用价格让用户动心

RGBW面板并非是一个新鲜的事物,其早在2004年左右就开始出现,其最初的目的不是用来提升分辨率的,主要是添加白色的像素可以让画面的亮度更高,也就是可以实现同等的能耗,亮度表现可以更强,或者利用较低的电量实现同等画面的亮度,因此是适合移动领域的显示技术,索尼之前也曾经推过这样的手机。

此次韩系企业用这种排列来提升画面的细腻程度,也是一个很巧妙的想法,移动设备屏幕小,这种排列不能在小屏幕上提升分辨率表现,对于50英寸的大尺寸面板来说,像素的体积缩小为原来的一半,加白色像素的增加,画面的像素数量会呈现急剧的上升,从而在次像素上达到一定的数量,实现了4K的标准,当然就实际的独立像素来说,其仍旧无法和真正的4K面板相比。

RGBW能够改变4K市场的格局?

可能有的用户会说这是一种偷工减料,但是其也的确有亮度更高,更加节能以及成本的优势,可以让更加精细的面板进入千家万户,至于其颜色不纯的弊端可以利用颜色处理技术来加强,细腻的效果上虽然无法通过软件来弥补,但是其毕竟比1080P的面板要清楚,尤其是第二种RGBW排列方案,在独立像素上,也几乎贴近了4K的水平,还是可以满足目前的使用需求。

目前已经有消息,创维、康佳和长虹将采用RGBWGreen或G+UHD面板,并将于2014年二季开始量产,其能否成功还是得看消费者的眼睛,毕竟市场才是检验技术的唯一真理,至于技术上是否有缩水,并不是一个技术成败的关键。
