微软过去投资了大量的资金用于研发项目，但在颠覆性设计和产品方面，微软的研发项目却难以与谷歌的Google?X项目媲美。不过，如今的微软正在打造一个Special?Projects团队，此团队将由DARPA前创新业务负责人Norman?Whitaker担任负责人。据称，此项目团队将专注“下一代颠覆性技术”，该团队属于微软研究中心的特别团队。从当前描述来看，微软的这一团队类似于谷歌的Google?X项目团队，但仍然有所区别。
