解放军严格管理“挑战”英国学员
去年10月底到11月初，来自阿根廷、巴西、日本、墨西哥、荷兰、泰国等10个国家的军事、防卫院校的20名学员和解放军8所院校的16名学员代表齐聚位于南京的解放军理工大学，参加第五届陆军国际学员周。贾森·约翰逊和理查德·列文两位英国桑赫斯特军校皇家军事学院学员也受邀参加。
参加活动前，两位英国学员都对中国军队的纪律性有一定认识，但是实际经历后，还是被解放军的严格管理所“震撼”。
活动期间，每4个中外学员被安排混编同住一个宿舍，作息时间全部按照中国军队的日常安排进行。每天早上6点，贾森·约翰逊就不得不在“老实说还没睡醒”的状态中起床；其他的纪律还包括：在食堂吃饭时不允许说话；在拍摄过程中，每每哨声一起，不管是否在采访，所有学员都必须集合待命……显然，军队高度纪律化的管理让英方学员甚至跟拍记者有些不适。
一周里，所有学员的活动都以集体名义进行，“这与桑赫斯特的做法并不一样，我不能想象四年时间步操去吃早午餐，这对桑赫斯特的大多数人来说是个挑战”，理查德·列文感叹。
中方的严管理高要求让英方学员震撼，同时，英方也带给了中国军人们新的体验。

在学习过程中，两位英国学员还受邀到中方军官家庭做客，这位中方军官以自己1993年入伍后的故事向英国学员们讲述解放军的进步，并表示解放军今后会“像西点军校一样”进一步扩大对外交流。
片中最为令人动容的一段是英国学员在中国学员陪同下到访南京大屠杀纪念馆，中国学员在对这段历史十分愤慨的同时，还借助镜头表达了坚决反对侵略战争的立场。
近距离的接触与跟踪拍摄成为了西方了解中国军队的绝佳机会。活动期间，英国驻华武官西蒙·莱维在被BBC记者问到是否把解放军看成威胁时，这位武官明确地表示，“中国不是敌人”，他建议通过加深相互理解对方来减少紧张摩擦，“如果你看看中国的历史和现在的外交政策，你就会明白中国并不信奉武力干涉。”这位武官说。
学员贾森·约翰逊亦表示，“中国的军官和学员都非常开放。中国的这支新式军队，势必将在环球事务中担任更重要角色。”
片尾，一名中方学员称，经过与国外军官们的相处，自己国际化视野“更开阔了”。
三年前就有拍摄想法
参与本片拍摄的英国威斯敏斯特大学中国传媒中心工作人员昨日告诉南都记者，3年多以前，BBC记者史蒂夫·休利特就有对中国军队进行拍摄的想法，中心将这一消息转达给了中国官方。此后，各方经过协调，决定选取陆军国际学员周进行拍摄，而且这一活动有英国学员参加，也符合BBC观众的收视习惯。
据了解，由于英国国防部对军人管理十分严格，为此，该中心主任戴雨果教授多次和英国国防部沟通，最后得到同意进行拍摄。
这位工作人员表示，英国社会一直以来对于神秘的中国军队都抱有强烈兴趣，多位英国记者都曾希望通过该中心联系中国有关部门进行实地采风，最后，专业能力颇受英国民众认可的史蒂夫·休利特得到了这一机会，并获得了中国官方的同意。
