河北省社会科学院历史研究所原所长、研究员谢忠厚，从上世纪90年代后期开始，他就与国内的学者一起，针对北平甲第1855部队展开了研究。
谢忠厚：就是这个1855部队在天坛的影像资料。日本在中国的五支细菌部队，就731、100、1855、1644和8604，这些细菌部队都非常恶劣，就它的总的指挥部来说、总的大本营来说，那是731。华北的1855，他的细菌战的情况也好，活人解剖的情况也好，细菌实验的情况也好，那都是非常残酷的。从影像资料方面来看，这算是填补了一个研究的空白。
收集到这些珍贵照片的北京华辰拍卖行，从今年3月起开始构思“影像的占领：1894至1945日本侵华影像采集研究”摄影展，并发出影像征集的相关通知，随后，拍卖行从一位日本藏家的手中收集到1855部队的影像资料。
华辰拍卖行影像部工作人员李欣：当时拿过来我们并没有意识到它的珍贵性，后来在梳理的过程中发现，这是一个日本人对华侵害的一个重要的证据。
这些照片中，有不少日本军人和外穿白大褂、内穿军装的男子。其中一张照片以实验室为背景，人物背后摆满了实验器具，文字注解为“于北平天坛野战防疫部”。另外，不少照片有中日文夹杂的标注“北平天坛”、“京都陆军病院出发17人纪念”、“卫生材料”等字样。谢忠厚认为，影像资料的出现，同时将对日本政府直面历史有一定的意义。
谢忠厚：从日本官方来看，他们是不承认这个细菌部队，咱们不是经过多少年跟日本打官司，他才承认有细菌部队有细菌战，但是作为1855这支部队，过去很长很长时间以来，人们也不知道有这个部队。
1937年“七·七”卢沟桥事变之后，一支对外宣称“华北派遣军防疫给水部也就是1855部队”的侵华日军迅速进驻到当时国民党在天坛神乐署设立的中央防疫处。这支部队的规模在日本投降前的7年中不断的扩大着，修筑了日军宿舍、病房、工作室、小动物室、地下冷库和水塔等大量设施。同样对这支部队，做过系统研究的原崇文区地方志办公室工作人员侯玺说，一直到解放后，1949年冬天，在细菌部队的驻队，仍然残留着他们研究细菌武器的罪证，包括消毒用的三口大锅、培养细菌用的箱子，还有鼠疫杆菌试管等等等。
侯玺：侵华日军1855部队是继731细菌部队之后成立的又一只细菌部队，这个该部队共有兵员1500人，它有一个总部，下面设有13个支部和办事处。这个部队主要是研制和生产霍乱、痢疾、疟疾等这些细菌和原虫，并且饲养了大批的老鼠、跳蚤和其他的这些东西，他们每天把老鼠从笼子里头取出来，放在铺有莲子、血粉、和豆粕的桶里头，然后再把跳蚤也放进去，让跳蚤通过感染鼠疫菌，然后它把这种菌种配备到侵略军的部队中去，一有命令马上它就释放这种细菌。
从天坛西天门进入后，沿着围墙，经过数百米长的石路，就到达神乐署大门。神乐署原是专司明清两代皇家祭天大典乐舞的机构，在日军侵华期间这里被日军1855部队当做实验厂，如今各建筑都已经修葺一新，丝毫看不出战争的痕迹。然而，在大门东南方爬山虎的掩映下，一块上刻“侵华日军细菌部队遗址”几个字的汉白玉石碑仍然铭刻着那段历史。
石碑对日军华北甲1855细菌部队进行了简单的介绍，并指出这支部队曾经在天坛外坛以野战供水和传染病预防为招牌，培育鼠疫细菌等，进行细菌武器研究，还曾经用中国人进行“活体实验”。
如今，再走进天坛神乐署，国槐郁郁葱葱的生长着，草坪边围坐着一些人，打牌或者聊天。但是，在天坛神乐署院子东南边，两块碑石被嵌进墙壁，一块标示“侵华日军细菌部队遗址”，另外一块写有1855部队的大致情况介绍。记者拿出部分影像，那里的工作人员一眼就认出了老照片的拍摄地。
工作人员：这应该就是那个拐角的这一块儿。殿和殿，侧殿和侧殿的那个拐角，因为它这个殿的顶子和这个是一样的。要不大殿就不可能，这个下面它是一个拐角嘛不是。
记者：反正看这个照片应该是可以判断出这个……

但是，在日本战败投降前夕，日军花了一周的时间做销毁工作，大量证据被毁，官兵逃走，日方始终不承认有这支部队存在。
侯玺：在日本投降前夕，这个部队，将它实验用的一些仪器、一些动物和重要的资料统统销毁，并且用坦克车把它培养细菌用的箱子和当时用的汽油桶都压毁，另外把大批的菌种和血粉都埋入地下，然后把这支部队加以解散，把部队的名称也从华北派遣军的名册当中给除掉，这个部队所属军医官兵也都转业到陆军医院去，日本投降以后，中国政府代表者接收这个地方的时候，他们只交出了麻疹、伤寒菌种和一般的常用的消防器材，1855部队的官兵也有的假扮成日侨逃回了国内，有的混进了其他部队被遣送回国。
20世纪90年代，国内学者开始对1855部队进行系统研究，加上包括原1855部队日本卫生兵的指认和谢罪活动，这支细菌部队的罪行才逐渐被还原，如今，165张影像资料首次现身，无疑将成为又一铁证，谢忠厚和侯玺两位专家提出，如果可以将照片影印留档，将对研究有重要价值，华辰拍卖行影像部工作人员李欣表示，目前，照片已经成交，根据《拍卖法》的相关规定，不便透露买家信息，但是愿意就留档问题，与买家进行沟通，同时，拍卖行也将以借展的形式，在多个城市进行巡展。
